Rob Couhig’s proposed purchase of Reading FC did not complete in September 2024 because negotiations failed to produce an agreement, the club said. A later Guardian investigation reported that a debt of more than £55 million secured against the stadium, alongside a court restriction on transferring it, was a serious obstacle to the sale. That reporting offers a possible explanation, not a confirmed account of every reason the deal fell through. Couhig eventually completed a takeover in May 2025.
Why did the Reading takeover collapse?
Reading’s public explanation was brief. The club said: “Despite lengthy and complex negotiations, the parties have been unable to find an agreement.” It said it would pursue alternative options. Neither that statement nor the available reporting establishes one definitive cause agreed by all parties.
The proposed transaction was described as complex and involved laws in multiple countries. Couhig had put at least £5 million toward bills and wages during the process; Reading said those loans, with interest, had been repaid.
Was the stadium debt behind the failed sale?
In October 2024, The Guardian reported, based on documents, that Prestige Fortune Asia, the holding company associated with owner Dai Yongge, owed Haitong International Securities more than £55 million including interest. The report said the loan was secured against Reading’s stadium, repayment had been overdue since 2022, and a court restriction prevented the stadium from being transferred while proceedings continued. The Guardian described the situation as jeopardising the sale.

This makes the debt and restriction a plausible major transaction obstacle. It does not establish that they were the sole reason for the September collapse: Reading’s statement did not specify why negotiations failed, and the club and Haitong declined to comment to The Guardian. The later reporting should therefore be distinguished from the parties’ public explanation.
How did Reading’s wider finances add to the pressure?
The stadium issue arose amid a longer period of financial strain. BBC Sport’s 2023 account of the club’s published accounts reported £146 million in pre-tax losses over five years and player wages equal to 234% of revenue in 2021. These are figures from the accounts as reported at that time, not a current measure of the club’s finances.

BBC Sport reported that 18 points were deducted under Yongge’s ownership. The penalties related to financial-rule breaches, failure to meet a business plan, and late wage and tax payments.
BBC Sport also quoted Professor Simon Chadwick, an expert in sport and geopolitical economy, on the broader context for the owner’s ability to move funds abroad: “Economic conditions have changed [since Dai’s takeover of Reading], the political mood in China has changed, the appetite for football has certainly changed shape.” That comment supplies background on changing Chinese political and financial conditions; it is not evidence of the legal reason the Couhig sale failed.

What happened to Rob Couhig’s Reading deal?
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| May 2017 | Dai Yongge and his sister Dai Xiu Li completed their takeover of Reading. |
| September 2024 | Couhig’s proposed purchase failed to complete after negotiations did not produce an agreement. Reading said it would pursue alternatives. |
| October 2024 | The Guardian reported the stadium-secured debt and court restriction that it said jeopardised the sale. |
| February 2025 | A separate bidder’s exclusivity period expired. Reading said it was in discussions with alternatives and that wages and HMRC payments were up to date, with Yongge contributing funds. |
| May 2025 | BBC Sport reported that Couhig completed the takeover, ending Yongge’s ownership. |
So the September 2024 failure was not the end of Reading’s sale process. Couhig later completed a takeover, but that subsequent outcome does not retroactively confirm a single cause for the earlier breakdown.
