Redbox shut down in July 2024 after its parent company, Chicken Soup for the Soul Entertainment (CSSE), entered bankruptcy and its case was converted to Chapter 7 liquidation. The collapse followed severe financial strain and operating problems; streaming was part of the changing market, but the available evidence does not show that streaming alone caused Redbox to close.
What happened to Redbox?
Redbox began operating in 2002 and became known for DVD-rental kiosks at retail locations. In August 2022, CSSE completed its acquisition of Redbox, combining the business with the parent’s digital video operations. Less than two years later, CSSE filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. On July 10, 2024, the case was converted to Chapter 7 liquidation, and Redbox’s kiosk operation and related services shut down.

Contemporaneous reporting described CSSE as having nearly $1 billion in debt. That figure refers to the parent company, not a separately established Redbox-only debt total. The Washington Post’s July 11, 2024 account covered the shutdown and bankruptcy chronology; the Los Angeles Times reported the closure the same day.
Why did Redbox shut down?
CSSE was in severe financial distress
The immediate context was the parent’s bankruptcy and liquidation. The reported debt burden was company-wide, and the bankruptcy left the parent unable to continue the Redbox business as it had operated.

Limited capital weakened content relationships and operations
CSSE’s 2023 Form 10-K directly connected its shortage of capital to business problems. The company said: “Additionally, during 2023 and into 2024, our limited capital resources have materially adversely affected our relationships with third party content providers which, in turn, has harmed our business operations and financial performance.” This is CSSE’s own explanation in its SEC filing, not an independent finding about the relative weight of each cause. Read the company’s 2023 Form 10-K.
The kiosk-rental market had been shrinking
Redbox’s core physical-rental format faced a market that had contracted well before the bankruptcy. The Los Angeles Times reported that U.S. consumer spending on kiosk rentals was $1.27 billion in 2017, about one-third lower than five years earlier, attributing the figure to Digital Entertainment Group. This is a historical industry measure, not Redbox revenue or a current market estimate. The Times discussed the figure in its July 2, 2024 article.

The 2022 acquisition did not resolve the problems
CSSE announced completion of the Redbox acquisition on August 11, 2022. The parent’s bankruptcy filing followed in June 2024. The short interval shows that the acquisition did not prevent the financial and operating crisis, but the chronology alone does not prove that the deal caused Redbox’s failure. CSSE’s acquisition announcement was filed with the SEC.
Was streaming the reason Redbox went out of business?
Streaming changed how people accessed movies and put pressure on kiosk rentals, but that is not a complete explanation for Redbox’s shutdown. Redbox also had digital video offerings, and CSSE’s filings and bankruptcy coverage point to financial distress, limited capital, and damaged content-provider relationships as company-specific problems. The sources do not quantify the share of the collapse attributable to streaming, the kiosk market, debt, or management decisions.

No. Redbox’s kiosk operation and related services shut down after CSSE entered Chapter 7 liquidation in July 2024. Redbox did not continue as a functioning rental service through a successor identified in the available company filings. CSSE’s first-quarter 2024 filing describes its digital and kiosk-related business before the shutdown, but does not establish a successor service or transfer of Redbox customer accounts or catalog. See CSSE’s first-quarter 2024 Form 10-Q.
What can former Redbox customers do now?
Redbox’s closure does not establish a particular replacement service, and no one streaming platform can be identified from these facts as a successor to Redbox. Availability and pricing vary by title and service. If you already own DVDs, a DVD player lets you watch those discs at home; it does not recreate Redbox’s rental service. Check current listings directly with retailers or video services before choosing where to watch a specific movie.
