Polymarket called its Iran-related prediction markets “invaluable” because it said their prices could turn many people’s judgments into timely forecasts when people were seeking answers during the U.S. and Israeli strikes. That was the company’s defense—not proof that the markets improved anyone’s understanding or decisions. Critics, including two U.S. senators, argued that wagers tied to military action could reward advance knowledge, expose sensitive signals, or create harmful incentives.
What Polymarket meant by “invaluable”
On March 1, 2026, after U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran, Polymarket posted a note above Iran-related markets. As quoted by The Daily Beast, the company said prediction markets harness “the wisdom of the crowd” to create forecasts and that this ability was “particularly invaluable in gut-wrenching times like today.” It added that people directly affected by the attacks had asked questions, and said markets could provide answers “in ways TV news and X could not.”
The argument is that a market price can quickly aggregate participants’ views about an uncertain event. Polymarket presented that as a useful information service during a crisis. The cited reporting, however, offers no independent survey or measured result showing that its Iran-market forecasts helped affected people, improved their decisions, or outperformed other sources. The public benefit was the company’s rationale, not an independently established outcome.
Why the markets drew criticism
Reported bets shortly before the strikes
The immediate controversy included accounts that reportedly bet shortly before the attacks. The Daily Beast, citing Financial Times reporting, said the account Dicedicedice won nearly $150,000 on a wager that the United States would attack Iran by February 28, 2026, while Magamyman reportedly made more than $360,000. These are reported winnings, not audited totals in the material cited here. Timing and profit can prompt questions, but they do not by themselves prove that a trader had confidential information or engaged in insider trading.

California Representative Mike Levin, quoted by The Daily Beast on March 1, said: “Prediction markets cannot be a vehicle for profiting off advance knowledge of military action.” That is his objection to the possibility of trading on privileged knowledge, not a finding that the named accounts possessed it.
National security, market integrity, and incentives
In a March 9, 2026 release reproducing their letter to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Senators Jack Reed and John Hickenlooper argued that contracts tied to military operations raise national-security, market-integrity, and ethical concerns. They said people with inside information could profit, rapid price movements might alert adversaries that U.S. action was imminent, and financial contracts connected to violence could create incentives for someone to commit violence for profit. The senators’ letter said: “The ability to trade event contracts tied to violent geopolitical events could create financial incentives for someone to actually commit violence for profit.”

The senators also said at least six Polymarket wallets made more than $1 million combined in a few hours betting on the date of U.S. or Israeli strikes. That figure is the lawmakers’ account in their letter, not an independently audited total or proof that the traders had inside information. Their concerns focus on risks that may exist even when suspicious timing alone cannot establish misconduct.
What Polymarket says its rules and controls do
Polymarket’s market-integrity page describes the platform as blockchain-based, with trades matched between users. The company says its rules prohibit trading on confidential information obtained in breach of a duty, illegal tips, and contracts whose outcomes a trader can influence. It also describes monitoring, public on-chain transaction records, and possible enforcement such as wallet bans, legal action, or referrals.

Reed and Hickenlooper’s release says that the Dodd-Frank Act and CFTC rules prohibit event contracts that “involve, relate to, or reference assassination or war.” The senators characterized Polymarket as offshore and not regulated by the CFTC, while saying it was purportedly not open to U.S. users. Those are the lawmakers’ descriptions, not a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice or a complete account of access and rules in every place.

Washington scrutiny continued beyond the March dispute. The Associated Press reported on April 17, 2026, that lawmakers and regulators were debating prediction-market oversight after high-profile trades. It described the legislative path as uncertain at that time; that report does not establish that proposed legislation became law or settle the broader legal debate.
