Re:

Why Pickup Trucks Got So Expensive—and What’s Driving the Price

Popular full-size pickups are costly partly because high-priced models and trims dominate sales. Supply recovery, lasting price increases, product changes, tariffs and fees also help explain what buyers see.

Pickup trucks feel so expensive because buyers are shopping in a market where popular full-size models often sell for more than $60,000, while the average is pulled upward by high-priced trims and equipment. Pandemic-era shortages helped push prices up, and they did not return to their 2019 nominal levels when inventory recovered. Newer tariff costs and destination fees add pressure, but they explain only part of the increase.

How expensive are new pickups?

Recent U.S. transaction data puts the cost of a full-size pickup in perspective. Kelley Blue Book (KBB) and Cox Automotive reported that all four leading full-size pickup nameplates were above $60,000 in average transaction price in May 2024. The Ford F-Series averaged $67,937, and the GMC Sierra averaged more than $70,000. These are averages across sales, not the price every buyer paid or the starting sticker price of every version.

Figure What it measures When and where
$67,937 Average transaction price for the Ford F-Series May 2024, U.S.; KBB/Cox Automotive
Above $60,000 for each of four leading nameplates Average transaction price for the Ford F-Series, Chevrolet Silverado, Ram Pickup, and GMC Sierra May 2024, U.S.; KBB/Cox Automotive
$64,261 Average transaction price for the full-size pickup segment; segment volume was 223,293 units December 2024, U.S.; KBB/Cox Automotive reported this as the segment’s highest-volume month of the year
$50,080 Average transaction price for all new vehicles—not pickups alone September 2025, U.S.; KBB/Cox Automotive

The broader new-vehicle average can make pickup prices seem even more striking, but it is not a pickup benchmark. In September 2025, KBB and Cox Automotive said the overall mix leaned toward electric vehicles and higher-end vehicles, and noted that the Ford pickup routinely cost more than $65,000. The vehicle mix matters whenever an average is used to describe the market.

Why the average price is so high

Expensive full-size trucks have an outsized effect

Four full-size pickups ranked among the ten best-selling U.S. vehicles in May 2024, according to KBB and Cox Automotive. When high-priced models sell in large numbers, they exert more influence on a sales-weighted average than less popular vehicles do. That is one reason an overall new-vehicle average can rise even without every model receiving the same-sized price increase.

What sells within a model line matters too. A truck with a larger cab, four-wheel drive, a more powerful engine, or premium packages can cost much more than a basic version. KBB described the U.S. market as having popular, fully equipped full-size pickups that are more luxurious than many luxury cars. The available data establishes that this kind of product mix affects averages, but does not quantify how much it accounts for the long-run increase.

Sticker price and transaction price answer different questions

  • MSRP is the manufacturer’s suggested retail price: the listed price before considering the actual deal.
  • Transaction price is the average amount buyers paid, as measured by the reporting source. It can reflect discounts and negotiated prices as well as the mix of versions sold.
  • Out-the-door cost is what a particular buyer must pay after charges such as destination, taxes, registration, and any dealer add-ons. An average transaction price is not this personalized total.

Trim, cab and bed, drivetrain, engine, packages, location, incentives, and negotiation can all change the price of a particular purchase. The average helps describe a market; it cannot tell you what a specific truck should cost at your dealer.

Why prices stayed high after pandemic shortages eased

Manufacturing disruptions and tight supply during and after the pandemic helped push new-vehicle prices higher. As inventory increased, dealers had more vehicles to sell and greater reason to offer incentives. In May 2024, Cox Automotive reported that new-vehicle inventory was up 51% year over year and that rising inventory was helping keep average prices in check while incentives increased.

More supply did not mean a return to the old price level. Cox Automotive’s 2025 review said U.S. inventory recovered close to pre-pandemic levels during 2024, but December 2024 new-vehicle transaction prices remained above 2019. They were just over 1% higher than a year earlier that December. The acute shortage-driven run-up had given way to slower price growth, not a reset to earlier nominal prices.

Why an older truck is not always a fair price comparison

A new model may have different safety equipment, fuel economy, carrying capacity, comfort, convenience features, or other attributes from a truck sold years earlier. Comparing two sticker prices without accounting for those changes does not show how much the price of an otherwise identical truck has changed.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) explains that its new-truck category includes pickup trucks, vans, and specialty vehicles, and that its price index adjusts for quality characteristics such as safety, fuel economy, carrying capacity, comfort, and convenience. Its CPI methodology uses manufacturer-provided cost information for quality adjustments and accounts for the way vehicle prices can move within a model year. That index is designed to measure price change, not to report the average amount buyers paid for pickups.

For a like-for-like comparison, match the model year, trim, cab, bed, drivetrain, engine, and equipment, then compare the same kind of price measure. A BLS index, an MSRP, and a KBB transaction-price average are different measures and should not be treated as interchangeable.

What tariffs and destination fees add in 2026

Tariffs are a newer cost layer, not a complete explanation for years of higher truck prices. In a March 30, 2026 analysis, KBB reported industry estimates of $1,600–$2,000 in tariff-related costs per U.S.-assembled vehicle and $5,000–$8,900 per imported vehicle. These are estimates reported for the vehicle industry, not a guaranteed surcharge on every pickup. Assembly in the United States does not remove exposure to tariffs on imported inputs such as steel and aluminum.

The same KBB analysis put the destination fee at $2,795 on most 2026 full-size trucks and SUVs from GM and Ford. That figure is specific to those manufacturers and model-year vehicles; it is not a universal pickup fee. KBB also reported that discounts and negotiation absorbed some list-price growth, so a higher sticker price does not necessarily translate dollar for dollar into a higher transaction price. Tariff policy and fees can change, so check the vehicle’s current price details before relying on these figures.

How to judge the price of a truck you might buy

  1. Define the truck you need. Decide on cab and bed size, drivetrain, engine, towing or payload needs, and essential equipment before comparing prices. Otherwise, you may be comparing a basic work truck with a substantially different, more equipped model.
  2. Compare like with like. Use the same model year, trim, configuration, and equipment across listings. Do not compare one model’s entry-level MSRP with another’s average transaction price.
  3. Ask for the full price, not just the monthly payment. Separate the vehicle price from destination, taxes, registration, dealer add-ons, and financing. A longer loan can lower a monthly payment while increasing the total amount paid.
  4. Check discounts and incentives for your situation. They may depend on location, eligibility, timing, or financing terms. Use the actual offer you qualify for rather than assuming the market average is the price available to you.
  5. Compare total cost against your budget. Include financing and ownership costs, not only the advertised price. If a full-size truck’s price is beyond your limit, compare a lower trim or a different size class on the requirements that matter to you; the available market data does not establish a universal affordability ranking among models.
