People cancel streaming services when the monthly price no longer feels justified by what they watch, when they finish the shows they signed up for, or when several subscriptions become too much to manage. But cancellations do not necessarily mean viewers are leaving streaming for good: many rotate services and return later. The 2025 findings show meaningful churn and an increase in some cancellation measures, not a uniform rise across every survey or service.
Why are people canceling streaming services?
Cost is a leading reason, but price and value are closely linked. In a September 9, 2025 YouGov online poll of 1,000 U.S. adults, 66% of respondents who had canceled at least one service cited cost as a factor. In Deloitte’s 2025 survey, 47% said they paid too much for streaming services, while 41% said streaming video-on-demand (SVOD) content was not worth the price—five percentage points more than the prior year. These figures come from different surveys and questions, so they describe related concerns rather than a single measure. YouGov · Deloitte
Monthly cost adds up across a household
Deloitte reported that the average household in its 2025 survey paid about US$69 per month for four paid SVOD services, up 13% from about US$61. A single service may seem affordable in isolation; the combined bill can feel harder to justify, particularly when household members use some services infrequently.
Viewers compare the fee with what they actually watch
In Deloitte’s survey, respondents named US$14 per month as the “just right” price for a favorite ad-free SVOD service and US$25 as “too much.” Those responses illustrate a perceived value threshold, not a universal market price or recommendation. A service can lose a subscriber even when that person likes streaming generally: the available shows may not feel worth that service’s recurring fee.

Some viewers leave after finishing the content they wanted
YouGov found that 26% of respondents who had canceled a service said they had already watched the content they were interested in. EY likewise found “watching the service less than before” was a cancellation rationale for 17% in both its 2024 and 2025 reporting years. Loss of favorite content was cited by 10% in 2024 and 12% in 2025. These patterns fit viewers subscribing for a series, season, sport, or event, then canceling when their reason to stay has passed. Do cancellations mean viewers are leaving streaming?
Not necessarily. Some people pause a subscription, watch elsewhere, and return when a new season or other desired content arrives. Kantar calls this “subscribe, watch, cancel, repeat.” Its 2025 report said 46% of U.S. consumers showed this behavior during the prior 12 months, compared with 23% in the U.K. Deloitte found that 24% of surveyed consumers had canceled and then renewed the same service within six months. A cancellation count therefore does not tell the whole story: it may include temporary breaks as well as permanent exits. Kantar Media · Deloitte

Is streaming churn actually rising?
The answer depends on what is being counted. Deloitte reported that 39% of respondents had canceled at least one paid SVOD service in the previous six months, and described that measure as relatively stable over several years. EY reported that 38% of streaming households had canceled or planned to cancel at least one platform, up from 35% a year earlier. These are not directly comparable: one asks about cancellations in a six-month period, while the other combines completed cancellations with plans to cancel. Neither figure establishes that every streaming service is losing subscribers at a faster rate. Deloitte · EY
Survey scope matters, too. YouGov’s poll was fielded online among 1,000 U.S. adults on September 9, 2025, with a reported overall margin of error of 3%. The findings cited here are mostly U.S.-focused; Kantar’s U.K. comparison is a separate market measure. Different surveys also ask different questions, so their percentages should not be combined into one estimate of how many people are abandoning streaming.

How unused subscriptions and service overload contribute
YouGov found that 36% of U.S. adults had at least one active streaming service they had not used in the previous six months. Ipsos reported that six in ten respondents thought there were too many services. Taken together, these findings suggest that some households may prune subscriptions as they review recurring bills or find managing several services burdensome. They support that interpretation, but do not prove that service overload caused any particular cancellation. Ipsos
What streaming providers are doing about subscription fatigue
Bundles and aggregation
Kantar describes bundling and aggregation as responses to the expense and effort of juggling separate subscriptions. Its 2025 report discusses examples from the 2024 landscape, including a Disney, Hulu, and Max combined bundle and a Comcast package that included Apple TV+, Netflix, and Peacock. These are dated examples in the report, not confirmation that the same offers remain available now; availability and terms can change by region and over time.

Lower-priced ad-supported plans
Deloitte found that 54% of surveyed SVOD subscribers had at least one ad-supported service, up eight percentage points year over year. The average ad-supported tier in its findings was around US$9 per month. That indicates that ad-supported plans are part of how consumers manage streaming costs, but it does not show that every such plan or bundle saves every household money. The trade-off includes ads, the titles available on the plan, and the total cost of services retained.
