In December 2025, Inglewood Station owner Penny Hudson said she closed her Beaufort Street out-of-school-hours-care (OSHC) centre in Maylands after the State Government announced plans for school-based services, including one at Maylands Peninsula Primary School. Hudson said she could not commit to a new lease while the rollout threatened the value and sale plans for her business. The school service later opened, but official records describe its capacity—not current vacancies.
Why did the Beaufort Street OSHC centre close?
PerthNow reported on 4 December 2025 that Hudson had planned to retire at 70 by selling her Maylands and Mount Lawley OSHC businesses. She said she was negotiating to sell both when she learned in early August about the planned school-site rollout. According to the report, she then could not commit to a new lease for the Beaufort Street centre, which closed.
Hudson estimated her financial hit at $500,000 to $700,000, saying the figure reflected her accountant’s assessment of lost business value, lease commitments and staffing costs. That is Hudson’s estimate, not an independently verified loss. She described the personal impact this way: “I’ve changed from being a self-funded retiree to being a pensioner.”
What did the Government announce?
The December 2025 report said the State Government had committed $15 million to expand before- and after-school care at 18 WA schools, including Maylands Peninsula Primary School and Mount Lawley Primary School. That was the total reported commitment across the 18 schools; it does not establish the amount allocated to either Maylands or Mount Lawley. Hudson said, “They’ve allocated $15 million for this … that’s $830,000 per school.”

Maylands Peninsula Primary School selected TheirCare as its provider, according to PerthNow. Early Childhood Minister Sabine Winton said the school had long sought an on-site service and that it was intended to complement existing local services. Mount Lawley MP Frank Paolino similarly said the Mount Lawley Primary School service would run alongside local services.
Did the Maylands Peninsula school service open?
Yes. Western Australian Legislative Assembly Hansard on 18 February 2026 described the new Maylands Peninsula Primary School campus service as open, initially with 20 places and expected to grow to around 60. City of Bayswater council minutes dated 24 March 2026 record the council noting an increase to 60 places for Term 2 of the 2026 school year.

Those records establish the reported opening and planned capacity, not how many children are currently enrolled or whether places are available. Families should confirm current enrolment status and session details directly with the school or provider.
What is known about facilities and care options?
Hudson and local parents raised concerns about the proposed facilities, while Winton said the Department of Education had made an initial site assessment and would progress upgrades. She also said the Department of Communities’ Education and Care Regulatory Unit would assess whether the space met regulatory requirements. The available statements do not independently settle the disagreement about facility quality, nor establish a general comparison between standalone and school-site OSHC.

- which school or location the service covers;
- whether it offers before-school care, after-school care and vacation care;
- its hours, current capacity and whether enrolment is open; and
- the layout, activity spaces and arrangements for children during the session.
The cited reporting and public records do not provide current provider-by-provider prices, vacancies or a complete service comparison. A parent who used Hudson’s Beaufort Street centre, Meredith Simpson, recalled that it “felt like she (daughter) was going to hang out at auntie and uncle’s house.” That is one parent’s description of the former centre, not a comparative assessment of care quality.

Is Hudson’s Mount Lawley OSHC centre also closing?
PerthNow said in December 2025 that the Mount Lawley site might close in approximately 15 months. That was a forecast at the time, not confirmation that it later closed. The public records described here do not establish the current status of Hudson’s Mount Lawley business.
