OpenAI’s partnership with Jony Ive is a strategic watch item for Apple, not an immediate threat to its business. It gives OpenAI a small hardware team and high-profile design leadership as it explores AI devices; it does not give the company Apple’s installed base, operating systems, manufacturing scale, retail network or developer ecosystem. The risk could grow if OpenAI creates a device that makes the iPhone less central to everyday digital tasks—but no such product had been established in the reporting available from 2025.
What did OpenAI acquire?
OpenAI announced on May 21, 2025 that io Products, Inc., the hardware company founded by Ive, Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey and Tang Tan, would merge with OpenAI. The merger was completed on July 9, 2025, according to OpenAI’s announcement and update. OpenAI said the io team would work closely with its research, engineering and product groups.
Axios reported a deal value of about $6.5 billion, including roughly $5 billion in OpenAI stock for the portion of io it did not already own. Axios also reported that OpenAI had held an approximately 23% stake through an earlier collaboration agreement and that io had about 55 employees. The structure matters: io’s operating team joined OpenAI, while Ive’s design collective, LoveFrom, remained independent. OpenAI described Ive as taking on deep design and creative responsibilities across the company; this is not simply the same arrangement as his former role inside Apple. (OpenAI.)

Why the deal alarms Apple watchers
Ive is closely associated with products that helped define Apple’s modern identity, including the iMac, iPod, iPhone, MacBook Air and Apple Watch. He worked closely with Steve Jobs during Apple’s product revival. That history makes the partnership symbolically powerful: the designer linked to the iPhone is now working with the company behind ChatGPT on new hardware. The concern is not merely that OpenAI might sell another gadget. A capable AI device could shift how people search, communicate, shop, travel, work and use digital services. If users increasingly ask an assistant to act for them instead of opening individual apps, the company controlling that interface could gain influence at the expense of the smartphone and its app ecosystem.
- OpenAI could combine advanced AI with consumer-product design experience.
- Former Apple product and design talent could help it develop a more approachable physical interface.
- A device that reduces dependence on app-by-app interaction could challenge the iPhone’s role as the default gateway to services.
Those are credible strategic risks, not evidence that Apple has already lost sales, customers or platform control.

Why Ive’s reputation is not an Apple-sized advantage by itself
Ive’s impact at Apple came from more than individual design talent. His work was part of a much larger system of hardware and software engineering, custom silicon, operations, manufacturing, services, retail, support and executive decision-making. A celebrated design can help make a product desirable; it cannot, by itself, ensure that the product works reliably at scale or becomes a daily habit.

Former Apple employees bring relevant experience, but they are not the same thing as Apple’s current organization.
Reporting on the io team identified former Apple design and product leaders, including Evans Hankey and Tang Tan. Their contribution will depend on whether OpenAI gives them clear authority, engineering resources, a coherent product strategy and capable manufacturing partners. The product remains the crucial unknown
OpenAI’s announcement established an ambition to develop AI hardware, not a finished product with confirmed specifications. Axios reported that OpenAI expected its first products to be shown in 2026. That was a forward-looking expectation reported in 2025, not confirmation of a shipping date or commercial success. (Axios on timing.)
In June 2025, reporting on court filings said the prototype was not finalized and was at least a year away from being advertised or sold. That dated report does not establish the project’s present status; it does show why early descriptions should not be mistaken for a final design. (TechCrunch on the court filings.)

It was also unclear whether a device would replace a smartphone, complement one or sit alongside it. Speculation about phones, wearables, home products or robots should not be treated as confirmed plans.

The gap between an appealing concept and a successful consumer product is substantial. A device must make a recurring task easier than existing alternatives while handling practical constraints such as battery life, connectivity, input, privacy, reliability and the cost of running AI services. People also have to want to carry, wear or keep it—and continue using it after the novelty fades.

OpenAI’s investment is a signal that a leading AI company sees potential in hardware as a way to make AI more useful. If the effort helps establish an AI-device category, Apple can learn which interactions consumers value and what they will accept. That is a strategic possibility, not a guaranteed benefit to Apple or a claim that OpenAI’s product must succeed for Apple to respond.
- It can test user behavior. The market may reveal whether people prefer voice, screens, cameras, wearables or more ambient interaction, and how much autonomy they are comfortable giving an assistant.
- It can clarify the role of a device. A new product may prove complementary to smartphones—or demonstrate that particular tasks can move away from them.
- It can sharpen competitive pressure. A serious rival may push Apple to improve Siri, Apple Intelligence, cross-device context and developer access to AI capabilities.
Apple has the resources to build AI features into its existing products or develop new hardware if a category proves valuable. That gives it options, not a guarantee of a fast or effective response. The competitive question is ultimately execution: whether Apple can turn its scale and integration into AI experiences people prefer.

When the partnership would become a real threat
The strongest challenge would not necessarily be a direct iPhone clone. It would be a useful, trusted interface that makes users reach for the iPhone less often. Watch for evidence that an OpenAI product can:
- Handle common tasks more naturally than a phone, rather than relying on impressive demonstrations alone.
- Provide reliable, low-latency assistance across communication, search, work and transactions.
- Work in a convenient form factor without requiring constant screen use or awkward input.
- Offer clear privacy and security controls for personal context and potentially ambient interaction.
- Support a sustainable price and service model, including the ongoing cost of AI inference.
- Attract developers or partners that expand its usefulness and reach beyond a narrow set of built-in features.
- Show repeat use and genuine substitution for phone behavior, rather than simply becoming an additional device.
These criteria separate a strategically interesting product from one capable of changing Apple’s competitive position. A device can be elegant and technically impressive yet fail to become a platform if it lacks compelling daily uses, dependable service, workable economics or broad distribution.
How to read the deal without overreacting
There are two common analytical mistakes. The first is to treat Ive’s presence as proof that OpenAI can recreate Apple’s product success. The second is to dismiss the deal because Apple has a larger ecosystem today. The acquisition establishes a serious attempt to combine AI and hardware; it does not establish that the attempt will succeed or that Apple is immune.
The better distinction is between a long-term challenge to the smartphone interface and an immediate threat to Apple’s business. The first is plausible if OpenAI delivers a product people use frequently and trust with meaningful tasks. The second is not demonstrated by the acquisition alone. A strategic partnership can matter without immediately changing Apple’s sales or profits.
There is also a branding complication: in June 2025, OpenAI temporarily removed promotional material following a court order connected to a trademark complaint involving “io” and “iyO,” as TechCrunch reported. That is a legal and naming issue, not proof that the underlying hardware strategy has failed.
