Oil prices eased as traders considered signs of recovering Middle East exports and a reported plan for additional Russian diesel supply. Continuing attacks and risks to shipping kept the outlook uncertain, however. The reports describe forces pulling prices in different directions; they do not establish that either announcement caused a specific portion of the price decline.
What happened to Brent and WTI?
In early trading on October 12, 2026, Brent was below $103 per barrel and West Texas Intermediate (WTI) was near $90, according to Gulf News. Those were intraday levels, not settlement prices.

A separate Reuters snapshot on October 6, 2026, showed Brent down $1.84, or 1.8%, at $98.48 a barrel and WTI down $1.42, or 1.6%, at $88.01 at 10:30 a.m. EDT. These are timestamped quotes from that session, not closing prices or a measure of the October 12 move. Benchmark price movements can differ by day and time, so the figures should not be read as one continuous price series.

Why were prices under pressure?
Middle East crude flows appeared to be recovering
Signs that more crude was moving out of the region eased some concern about a prolonged supply shortfall. The National, citing preliminary Kpler data, reported Saudi shipments through the Strait of Hormuz at 2.9 million barrels per day in September, up from around 1 million barrels per day in August. That is a reported change in shipments, not proof that the route was free of risk or that all regional supply had returned to normal.

In a Reuters report dated October 6, 2026, Vitol’s chief executive estimated that about 12 million barrels per day of crude and 2 million barrels per day of refined products had left the Middle East on tankers over the preceding seven to 10 days. This was an estimate for that particular period, not a standing export rate.
Gulf News reported on October 12 that Persian Gulf exports had reached 17.5 million barrels per day, or 98% of pre-war levels, attributing the estimate to JPMorgan Chase. The different measures refer to different reporting and time frames; they should not be combined as though they were the same data series.

Russian diesel plans added to expectations of supply
Reuters reported on October 9, 2026, that President Donald Trump said Russia had agreed to supply more than 300,000 tons of diesel immediately to the American and global market, with another 500,000 tons in November and 1 million tons “immediately thereafter.” Trump also said a further 3 million tons could arrive “within a short period of time,” conditional on the state of Russian diesel refineries.

Those quantities were part of Trump’s announcement. Reporting reviewed through October 12 does not confirm cargo schedules or that the diesel had physically arrived. The announcement could affect traders’ expectations, but the available reporting does not quantify a resulting change in Brent or WTI.

Why did geopolitical risk still matter?
Recovering flows did not mean supply was secure. Reuters reported attacks on Saudi airports, while a Dow Jones report on October 7, 2026, described elevated shipping risk in the Strait of Hormuz alongside ongoing attacks. The reports also pointed to transportation and insurance costs, which can remain high even when some export routes resume operating.
Saudi Arabia’s East-West pipeline to Yanbu had partially reopened after September attacks, according to The National’s October 2 report. The pipeline provides an alternative route toward the Red Sea, but that report also described vulnerabilities affecting alternative Saudi export routes. The distinction matters: infrastructure capacity is not the same as barrels successfully moving through a route at a given time.

As Reuters quoted oil broker PVM analyst John Evans on October 6, “the assumption of more crude getting through has dampened price fervour … for now.” The emphasis is on an assumption about flows, not a guarantee that disruption risks had ended.
How do diesel announcements relate to crude benchmarks?
Brent and WTI are crude-oil benchmarks; diesel is a refined petroleum product. Diesel availability depends on refinery output, product inventories, and shipping as well as crude supply. A reported diesel plan may influence broader energy-market expectations, but its tonnage is not equivalent to the same amount of crude entering the market, nor does it translate automatically into a measurable move in either benchmark.

This distinction also applies to emergency stock measures. Reuters reported on October 6 that G7 members had agreed to release emergency crude and diesel stocks, but at that time had not provided a product-by-product volume breakdown or identified participating countries. The National reported on October 2 that EU governments were discussing a French proposal for IEA members to release 50 million barrels of diesel and 50 million barrels of crude. Those were proposed figures under discussion in that report, not evidence that the stocks had already reached buyers.
What can—and cannot—be concluded from the price decline?
The reports support a mixed explanation: expectations of higher supply, from recovering Middle East exports and announced Russian diesel volumes, put downward pressure on prices, while attacks and shipping exposure limited confidence in a full return to normal. They do not establish how much of any particular price move came from each factor.
