NXP bought Jennic to add low-power, short-range wireless connectivity to its semiconductor portfolio. Announced on 26 July 2010, the deal brought NXP Jennic’s IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee technology, including chips, transceivers, modules and protocol software. The public terms were approximately $12.2 million for all of Jennic’s shares, plus up to $7.8 million in performance-based additional consideration over two years.
What NXP acquired
Jennic specialized in low-power wireless RF solutions based on IEEE 802.15.4 and ZigBee. NXP said the acquisition included hardware as well as software stacks for ZigBee PRO, 6LoWPAN and RF4CE. The company also expected approximately 50 UK-based Jennic employees to transfer to NXP. NXP’s announcement, reproduced by Semiconductor IP Hub, described the transaction as the purchase of 100% of Jennic’s shares.
This was more than a purchase of isolated components: Jennic brought a combination of radio hardware and networking software that could support connected devices. NXP said it would make Jennic’s products available through its worldwide distribution channels, extending the reach of that technology.
Why NXP wanted Jennic’s technology
NXP presented the acquisition as a way to add short-range wireless to its wider wireless semiconductor offering. Its stated target applications included smart-energy metering, smart lighting, building automation, asset tracking, environmental and logistics uses, and device remote controls.

At the time, NXP President and CEO Rick Clemmer linked demand for low-power wireless RF to new applications across industries. Executive vice president Alexander Everke said NXP believed 802.15.4 could enable new applications and replace traditional communications in some settings. Those were the company’s rationale and forecast at announcement, not proof that every projected use case subsequently succeeded.

How NXP later described the acquisition’s place in its portfolio
In a later SEC-filed annual report, NXP said its low-power connectivity business began with the Jennic acquisition. It described the business as 802.15.4-based low-power connectivity ICs with ZigBee and proprietary protocol stacks, and associated the portfolio with smart lighting, smart energy, wireless remote controls and switches, and healthcare monitoring. This retrospective account supports the view that Jennic was a portfolio-building acquisition, not simply a one-off purchase of a product line.

NXP’s 2019 JN516x ZigBee SDK notes document a development environment for JN516x wireless microcontrollers and ZigBee applications, including the JN5169. They show that the acquired technology family had a concrete software and development context. The notes are specific to that SDK version; they do not establish that JN516x parts or development boards are currently sold, supported, or compatible with a particular listing today.
