What Novo Nordisk announced
On September 10, 2025, Novo Nordisk said it would reduce its global workforce by approximately 9,000 positions from a baseline of 78,400 positions. The plan included around 5,000 reductions in Denmark and was expected to affect staff areas and headquarters functions. Novo Nordisk’s announcement described the move as a company-wide transformation.

The word “inventor” in the original headline is shorthand for Novo Nordisk as the company behind Ozempic; it should not be read as crediting one individual with inventing the medicine.
Why the company said it was cutting jobs
Novo Nordisk said rapid growth had made the organization more complex, and that it needed to simplify operations, speed up decisions, and focus resources on diabetes and obesity opportunities. It also cited a more competitive, consumer-driven obesity market and a recent slowdown in growth. CEO Mike Doustdar said, “Our company must evolve as well.”

Those are the company’s stated reasons, not independent proof that any one market condition caused the layoffs. A September 12, 2025 Futurism report by Noor Al-Sibai placed the announcement in the context of competition in GLP-1 medicines, including Eli Lilly’s Mounjaro and Zepbound. That context does not establish that competitors alone drove the decision.
What the savings and restructuring costs mean
Novo Nordisk projected annualized savings of approximately DKK 8 billion by the end of 2026. “Annualized” describes the expected yearly rate of savings once the changes are in place; it is not a claim that the company would save that full amount immediately in 2025.
The company separately anticipated approximately DKK 8 billion in net one-off restructuring costs, including impairment charges. It said around DKK 9 billion of costs would be recorded in the third quarter of 2025, offset by around DKK 1 billion in fourth-quarter savings. These are distinct from the annualized savings target: one-off costs are associated with carrying out the restructuring, while annualized savings are the expected recurring benefit.

A separate Novo Nordisk announcement dated September 14, 2026 reported over 67,000 employees worldwide. That is a later snapshot, but it cannot be directly subtracted from the 78,400-position baseline announced in 2025: the figures refer to different dates and use different terms—employees versus positions—and the cited announcement does not reconcile them.
