Why Nova Minerals Is Moving Toward Antimony Plant Construction in Alaska

Nova Minerals says its Alaska project would link Estelle mine feed with antimony processing at Port MacKenzie. Equipment arrived, but facility construction remained conditional on permits as of October 8, 2026.

Nova Minerals says it is advancing an Alaska antimony project to build a U.S.-based supply chain that runs from mining at its Estelle project to processing and refining at Port MacKenzie. A US$43.4 million U.S. Department of War award supports the plan, but it does not guarantee the project will be completed or commercially successful.

As of the company’s October 8, 2026 update, equipment had arrived at Port MacKenzie and early earthworks were underway. The refinery facility itself had not yet begun construction: Nova said that work could start in the coming weeks, subject to remaining permits.

Why Nova says it is advancing the project

Nova’s stated rationale is to create a vertically integrated U.S. antimony supply chain, with planned mine-side feed preparation at Estelle and downstream processing and refining at Port MacKenzie. In a July 2026 announcement, the company framed the project as a response to U.S. defense and critical-material sourcing priorities. Nova said antimony is among the critical minerals for which the United States remains heavily reliant on imports; that is the company’s characterization, not an independently verified trade statistic in the cited material.

Nova points to a US$43.4 million U.S. Department of War award, announced in October 2025, for development of an antimony mine at Estelle and a downstream refinery at Port MacKenzie. The award is a source of project support, not a guarantee of completion, future customers, profitability, or production.

Nova’s July statement also linked its plans to an Executive Order signed July 20, 2026, which the company said emphasizes U.S. or trusted-allied sourcing and supply-chain traceability for military equipment and critical materials. CEO Christopher Gerteisen described the policy as consistent with the company’s rationale for its planned infrastructure. That framing explains Nova’s strategic case; it does not establish that the project will secure buyers or achieve commercial returns.

How the proposed Alaska operation is meant to work

Estelle: prepare mine-side feed

Nova’s July 13, 2026 engineering announcement describes planned front-end work at Whiskey Bravo, within the Estelle project: crushing, screening, ore sorting, concentrate storage, and load-out. The company identifies Estelle as the intended source of stibnite-bearing feed. This plan should not be read as evidence that a defined antimony resource or plant-feed reserve has been established.

Port MacKenzie: process and refine

At Port MacKenzie, the proposed pilot operation would handle further crushing and screening, sorting, beneficiation, refining, product recovery, and supporting utilities, reagents, infrastructure, and logistics. Nova says the planned refining stage would use a proprietary hydrometallurgical method to produce antimony trisulfide, which would then be filtered, dried, and bagged.

The company describes the design as modular. It has identified possible future additions for antimony trioxide and antimony metal, but these are expansion possibilities, not products the current pilot is already making. Nova says the pilot could process Estelle concentrate and potentially feedstocks from other domestic and allied sources.

Equipment delivery and site preparation

In its October 8, 2026 announcement, Nova said all remaining key equipment for the planned Port MacKenzie processing and refinery operation had arrived on October 6. The company listed two ball mills, a jaw crusher, an apron feeder, hydraulic filter presses, and ancillary equipment. It had previously reported that a 500-ton equipment shipment arrived on September 6. Nova also reported that early earthworks were underway.

These are reported delivery and site-preparation milestones, not proof that the refinery facility is built or operating. Nova said construction of the facility could commence in the coming weeks, subject to receipt of remaining permits.

Permitting, construction, and production

The key distinction is between readiness to build and construction of the processing and refinery facility itself. The October 8 update said permits remained outstanding, making their receipt a condition for construction to commence. The cited announcements do not establish that a complete permit set has been issued.

Nova has referred to near-term antimony production and 2026/2027 timing, but those are forward-looking targets rather than confirmed production dates. The company’s October update also said the 2026 Estelle field season had concluded after approximately 8,000 metres of diamond drilling focused on the RPM gold deposit. Samples and core had been sent for analysis, with results expected later. It described the Stibium and Styx antimony prospects as progressing toward potential resource delineation and production; the update did not establish an antimony resource or demonstrate reserves sufficient to supply the planned plant.

What the test results do—and do not—show

A Nova announcement in October 2025 reported a test on a 500-kilogram Styx sample. The company said a single pass recovered 60.3% of the antimony in 26.1% of the sample’s mass, raising feed grade from 15.2% to 35.2% Sb. This is a company-reported sample result, not a plant-scale recovery guarantee or proof of commercial economics.

Nova has also said it acquired equipment from a recently decommissioned North American beneficiation circuit, which it expected to shorten lead times and improve capital efficiency. Those are the company’s expectations; the announcements cited here do not quantify resulting savings or establish project economics.

What investors should take from the announcement

The rationale Nova gives is a combination of U.S. supply-chain strategy, defense-related funding, and a proposed Alaska-based route from mine feed to refined antimony trisulfide. The status is more limited than the phrase “moving toward construction” may suggest: by October 8, 2026, major equipment had arrived and early earthworks were underway, while construction of the processing and refinery facility remained conditional on outstanding permits.

The company announcements establish neither a production volume nor a binding customer contract, independently verified demand forecast, completed permit set, or demonstrated commercial viability. Treat future production dates, planned expansion products, and expected project benefits as Nova’s targets or projections unless separately confirmed.
