Re:

Why Morgan Stanley Raised Apple’s Target to $315 in December 2025—and Why It’s Outdated

Morgan Stanley’s $315 Apple target was a December 2025 call built on higher FY2027 earnings, iPhone upgrades and Services growth. Later reports put its target higher.

Morgan Stanley raised its Apple price target from $305 to $315 on December 17, 2025, kept its Overweight rating, and pointed to a stronger outlook for the year ahead. The $10 increase—about 3.3%—came chiefly from a higher earnings estimate, not a richer valuation multiple. The call was built around an iPhone upgrade cycle, Services growth and possible AI-related upgrades, but the $315 target is now historical: later reports put Morgan Stanley’s target at $330 in April 2026 and $360 in June 2026.

What Morgan Stanley changed

The December 17, 2025 report attributed the change to analyst Erik Woodring. Morgan Stanley lifted its target from $305 to $315 and retained an Overweight rating, signaling that it expected Apple to outperform the analyst’s coverage benchmark. The increase was $10, or approximately 3.3% of the previous target. AppleInsider’s report and Investing.com’s coverage tied the valuation to fiscal 2027 earnings, rather than presenting $315 as a direct estimate of Apple’s 2026 earnings or year-end share price.

A price target is an analyst’s valuation judgment, not a promised future share price. The available secondary reports connect this one to a particular earnings year and valuation framework; they do not fully reproduce the original note’s methodology or establish its exact intended horizon. “Incredible 2026” was headline language describing the outlook, not a verified direct quotation from Morgan Stanley.

How the $315 valuation was calculated

According to the reports, Morgan Stanley raised its fiscal 2027 earnings-per-share estimate from $9.55 to $9.83 while keeping its valuation multiple at about 32 times expected earnings. Multiplying $9.83 by 32 gives $314.56, which rounds to $315. The target change therefore reflected higher projected earnings power, rather than a higher price-to-earnings multiple.

The same coverage reported an approximately 5% increase in the firm’s revenue assumptions. It also described some pressure on gross margins, illustrating why revenue and earnings forecasts can rise even when costs are expected to weigh on profitability: stronger sales, pricing, product mix and Services could more than offset some cost pressure in the forecast. These figures are Morgan Stanley estimates as reported by secondary sources, not Apple guidance.

What the “incredible 2026” thesis rested on

An iPhone replacement cycle

The near-term case centered on iPhone demand. Morgan Stanley expected the iPhone 17 cycle to benefit from consumers replacing older phones, including people who had kept devices longer. Carrier subsidies, trade-in offers and product improvements could make upgrading more attractive. The call also relied on the possibility that Apple could raise product prices without losing enough unit demand to undermine revenue growth.

Morgan Stanley estimated that roughly 550 million iPhones would still be in use without Apple Intelligence capability by the end of fiscal 2026. That is an analyst estimate, not an Apple-reported installed-base figure. The investment logic was that new AI features could make older devices feel less capable and encourage replacement; whether that effect would be large enough to change upgrade behavior remained uncertain.

AI as an upgrade catalyst, not a proven revenue stream

The reported $315 case did not depend on Apple immediately generating substantial direct revenue from AI. Instead, Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri were potential reasons for customers to buy newer hardware. That distinction matters: a feature can support device demand without appearing as a separately monetized AI business.

In June 2026, Apple announced a next-generation Siri and described a beta expected later in the year, with initial language and device limitations. The announcement supported the idea that AI remained a product catalyst, but it did not establish that AI had become a material standalone source of revenue. See Apple’s Siri announcement and its Apple Intelligence availability details.

Services growth and pricing

Morgan Stanley expected Services revenue to continue growing at a double-digit rate, citing pricing changes, App Store improvements and the recurring nature of the business. This was the analyst’s forecast, not a guarantee that Services would grow at that rate in every quarter. Apple’s own statements provide a baseline: Services revenue was $30.013 billion in fiscal 2026’s first quarter and $30.976 billion in the second quarter, according to its first-quarter and second-quarter financial statements.

Supply chain, tariffs and earnings resilience

The reported thesis also relied on Apple’s scale and supply-chain position to help manage component costs, and on less severe China tariff pressure than a more adverse scenario would imply. Those were assumptions, not assured outcomes. Higher memory and other component costs could still compress margins, while trade policy or supply disruptions could change the economics of production.

What could undermine the thesis

  • Memory and component costs: Higher DRAM prices and other input costs could reduce gross margins. Passing costs through via higher prices could protect revenue but weaken demand if customers are price-sensitive.
  • AI delivery and adoption: Delayed or underwhelming Apple Intelligence and Siri features might not persuade enough owners of older phones to upgrade. Better user experience would not, by itself, prove meaningful AI monetization.
  • China and trade conditions: Demand weakness, competition, regulation, geopolitics, tariffs or supply-chain disruption could challenge assumptions about sales and costs.
  • Long replacement cycles: A large installed base creates an opportunity, but customers can continue using older devices rather than replace them on an analyst’s timetable.
  • Valuation risk: The approximately 32-times fiscal 2027 earnings multiple was an important part of the valuation. If investors assigned a lower multiple, the share price could fall short of the target even if earnings grew.
  • Services regulation: Legal or regulatory changes affecting the App Store could pressure the economics of a business expected to contribute to growth.

Apple’s own risk disclosures include macroeconomic conditions, government policies, international disputes, product transitions, reliance on third-party suppliers, technology-system risks and legal or regulatory developments. Its fiscal 2025 third-quarter release links to the company’s broader discussion of factors affecting results and its stock.

What happened after the $315 call

Apple’s fiscal 2026 results supplied evidence investors could compare with the thesis, though quarterly revenue alone cannot establish that an analyst’s valuation was right. Apple reported fiscal first-quarter revenue of $143.756 billion, including $85.269 billion from iPhone and $30.013 billion from Services. For the second quarter, it reported revenue of $111.184 billion, including $56.994 billion from iPhone and $30.976 billion from Services. The figures are Apple-reported, from its fiscal 2026 first-quarter statements and second-quarter statements.

Apple’s July 2026 third-quarter release described double-digit growth across iPhone, Mac and Services and highlighted its new Siri AI. That is evidence of reported business performance and product development, not proof that the December target’s entire upgrade or margin thesis played out as forecast. The release is available from Apple.

June 2026 A subsequent report said Morgan Stanley raised the target to $360, citing Apple’s AI strategy. Investing.com’s report is secondary coverage.
August 16, 2026 The $315 figure is a historical December 2025 target, not the latest Morgan Stanley target reflected in the cited later reports. A third-party tracker lists a further revision to $364, but without stronger confirmation it should not be treated as established: price-target.com.

How to assess an analyst target like this

  1. Anchor it to its publication date. Compare a target with the share price when it was issued, not today’s price; the reported target alone does not tell you the return an investor could expect without that starting price.
  2. Check the earnings year. Fiscal 2027 EPS is not the same thing as calendar 2026 earnings. Apple’s fiscal year does not align with the January-to-December calendar year.
  3. Separate forecast growth from valuation. Here, the reported multiple stayed around 32 times earnings while the EPS estimate rose. A target can increase without the analyst deciding that each dollar of earnings deserves a higher valuation.
  4. Test the operating assumptions. Track iPhone shipments and pricing, replacement behavior, Services growth, memory costs and gross margins against the assumptions behind the call.
  5. Check execution and revisions. Assess whether AI features ship on the stated timetable and whether analysts subsequently change estimates or targets after results and product updates.

Apple’s investor-relations site is the primary place to check company releases and filings. Analyst targets add a point of view, but should be weighed against company results, risks and the assumptions an investor considers plausible.
