Its first television ad was scheduled for January 30, during the AFC Championship Game. The campaign’s main pitch was privacy—not cheaper texting.
What Meta’s U.S. WhatsApp campaign included
Meta planned television, billboard and online advertising. The ads used a physical-mail analogy to explain the privacy distinction: an unencrypted message was like a letter someone else could open. The aim was to persuade more Americans to adopt WhatsApp, according to Tech Times’ January 28, 2022 report, which described the campaign and the role of WhatsApp head Will Cathcart.
This was a marketing and positioning push, not an announcement of a new U.S. subscription or a major redesign. The report described the January 30 broadcast as the campaign’s first television ad; that does not establish that it was WhatsApp’s first U.S. advertisement of any kind.
Why the United States was a difficult market
WhatsApp had global scale but a smaller overall position in the United States than in many international markets. Tech Times reported more than 2 billion WhatsApp users worldwide as of 2021; that is a dated global figure, not a current U.S. count.

Americans already had established ways to message. iMessage was built into Apple devices, SMS was available on mobile phones, and Messenger and Snapchat had existing audiences. Meta previously attributed WhatsApp’s historically limited U.S. presence to the dominance of other services and comparatively inexpensive texting in the country; that explanation is Meta’s own account.
That market structure creates a network-effect problem: a messaging app is more useful when a person’s friends, family, coworkers and communities are already there. A download alone does not make WhatsApp a household’s default. Users have less reason to switch when existing contacts are reachable through iMessage, SMS or another familiar app—and less economic pressure when texting is already convenient.
Why privacy was the campaign’s main pitch
WhatsApp’s personal messages and calls use end-to-end encryption: the content is designed to be readable by the participants, rather than by WhatsApp or other third parties while it is being transmitted. Meta presented this as a reason to choose WhatsApp over ordinary unencrypted messaging. It was a privacy proposition, not proof that WhatsApp was more secure than every competing service in every respect.
Encryption does not make an account or every interaction invisible. Message contents are distinct from account information and metadata; recipients can copy, screenshot, forward or disclose what they receive. Group membership and interaction patterns also raise considerations separate from whether message content is encrypted.

End-to-end encrypted backups were an optional added protection, separate from the encryption of messages in transit; Meta said neither WhatsApp nor the backup provider could read those protected backups or access the key. WhatsApp also offered disappearing messages, which users could enable by default for new chats, and other privacy and security controls. These features are described in Meta’s January 2022 privacy update. Their existence does not mean every backup or account detail is automatically protected in the same way as an encrypted personal message.
How cross-platform use could help—and what switching still required
WhatsApp works across iOS and Android, a practical advantage for conversations that cross Apple’s ecosystem. In the United States, SMS has often served as the fallback when iPhone and Android users message one another. A cross-platform service could give those contacts a shared place for conversations, calls and group chats, but only if both sides adopt it.

Moving the social network is only part of switching costs. People may also want to keep years of chat history and media. The January 2022 report noted work on making chat-history transfer between iOS and Android easier, addressing a barrier that advertising alone could not remove.

Meta’s consumer campaign and its business-messaging plans were related, but they were not the same initiative. The January advertising message was privacy and secure communication; it was not publicly described as an advertisement for WhatsApp Business.
Later in 2022, Meta announced broader access to a cloud-based WhatsApp Business Platform and promoted tools including click-to-message ads and customer-management features. Its May 2022 announcement framed those products around helping businesses communicate with customers. Meta also described business discovery and commerce features in selected countries in a November 2022 announcement.
A larger consumer audience could make WhatsApp more useful to businesses, but the consumer ad campaign did not itself establish business adoption or commercial results. For a company considering WhatsApp, customer use, ability to respond, consent and operational needs matter more than the app’s global popularity alone.
Could the campaign overcome U.S. network effects?
Privacy and cross-platform availability gave Meta a clear reason to ask Americans to try WhatsApp. International contacts and communities already using the service could also bring existing networks into the United States. But Apple’s installed base, familiar alternatives and the need for contacts to move together remained substantial obstacles. Privacy advertising could raise awareness without changing those habits.
The evidence confirms a campaign and its intended strategy, not its outcome. The cited report does not provide a before-and-after U.S. user figure or demonstrate that the television, billboard and online ads materially changed WhatsApp’s U.S. market share. The campaign was an attempt to make privacy a reason to adopt the app; it is not evidence that Americans abandoned SMS or made WhatsApp the country’s leading messaging service.
