McDonald’s did not announce a Russia-specific ban on Happy Meals. It first paused all restaurant operations in Russia on March 8, 2022, then announced on May 16 that it would leave the country and sell its restaurant business. The locations were to lose McDonald’s branding and menu. A successor chain later planned a children’s combo similar to a Happy Meal, but that was a different product—and the details Reuters reported were from December 2022.
Did McDonald’s specifically end Happy Meals in Russia?
No separate Happy Meal decision appears in McDonald’s announcements. The company’s March 8, 2022 statement said it would temporarily close all its Russian restaurants and pause operations. It cited the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine and operational challenges, and said it would continue paying its Russian employees during the pause. At the time, CEO Chris Kempczinski said, “At this juncture, it’s impossible to predict when we might be able to reopen our restaurants in Russia.” McDonald’s March 8 statement
On May 16, McDonald’s announced that it would exit the Russian market and begin selling its restaurant business. The company said the restaurants would be “de-Arch[ed]”—they would no longer use McDonald’s name, logo, branding, or menu. That broader business decision explains why McDonald’s Happy Meals were no longer part of the restaurants’ offerings; the public announcement did not single out the children’s meal. What happened to McDonald’s Russian restaurants?
McDonald’s said it planned to sell its restaurant portfolio to a local buyer. The company described the move as an exit after more than 30 years in Russia and connected it to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine and the unpredictable operating environment. Kempczinski wrote, “And our commitment to our values means that we can no longer keep the Arches shining there.” McDonald’s May 16 announcement

For scale, Reuters reported that McDonald’s had 847 Russian restaurants and 62,000 employees in 2022. The first Moscow location had opened in 1990. Those figures describe the business at the time of the exit, not its present operations. Reuters, March 8, 2022
McDonald’s said it expected exit-related charges of approximately $1.2 billion to $1.4 billion, primarily non-cash. That was the company’s estimate when it announced its exit in May 2022, not a statement of the final realized cost. McDonald’s May 16 announcement

What replaced the Happy Meal?
The restaurants changed hands and reopened under a different brand, Vkusno & tochka. In a report dated December 12, 2022, Reuters said the chain planned a Kids’ Combo described as similar to a Happy Meal. The report said it included a free book at that time. CEO Oleg Paroev also said the chain might seek a partner to produce toys; Reuters did not report that a toy partner had been selected. Reuters, December 12, 2022
| Question | McDonald’s in Russia | Vkusno & tochka, as reported in December 2022 |
|---|---|---|
| Brand and operator | McDonald’s announced an exit and sale process; the restaurants were to stop using its name and branding. | The successor chain operated under a different brand. |
| Menu identity | McDonald’s said its menu would be removed from the restaurants as part of the transition. | Reuters reported a planned Kids’ Combo similar to Happy Meal. |
| Children’s-meal details | No separate Happy Meal termination was announced. | Reuters said the combo included a free book at the time; a toy-production partner was only a possibility. |
The Kids’ Combo was not a McDonald’s Happy Meal: it belonged to the successor chain, and the available report documents plans and details from December 2022 rather than a current menu. Paroev said, “We hope Russian consumers will appreciate the Big Hit and that it will become as much of a symbol of Vkusno & tochka as the Big Mac is a symbol of McDonald’s.” Reuters, December 12, 2022

What is known about the successor chain’s menu now?
The cited reporting establishes what Vkusno & tochka planned in December 2022, including the Kids’ Combo and free book. It does not establish the chain’s current children’s-meal contents or whether it later arranged toy production. It would be inaccurate to present those dated details as current offerings.
