Why Marketing Matters in Today’s Business Landscape

Marketing helps businesses understand customers, shape valuable offerings, reach audiences, and learn from results. Its value depends on the goal, audience, channel mix, and measurement.

Marketing matters because it helps a business understand the people it serves, shape an offering around their needs, make that offering available, explain its value, and learn from the response. It is broader than advertising: it connects customer insight to decisions across the business. Marketing can support growth, but no channel or campaign guarantees sales.

What marketing means beyond advertising

The American Marketing Association (AMA) defines marketing as “the activity, set of institutions, and processes for creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging offerings that have value for customers, clients, partners, and society at large.” That definition covers the offering itself and how it reaches people, not just the messages used to promote it. AMA’s definition of marketing

Marketing research is part of that work. The AMA describes it as the function that connects consumers, customers, and the public with marketers through information used to identify opportunities and problems, evaluate actions, monitor performance, and improve understanding. In practice, customer feedback and market information can help a business decide what to offer, how to explain it, and what to change.

OpenStax likewise frames marketing around understanding customer wants. It describes customer value as perceived benefits relative to the costs a customer incurs to acquire an offering. Those costs can include more than money: time, effort, and uncertainty may also affect whether a customer sees an offering as worthwhile. OpenStax, “Marketing and the Marketing Process”

How marketing helps a business make better decisions

Marketing connects what a business learns about its audience with practical choices. A company may use that understanding to refine its product or service, set or communicate a price, choose where customers can obtain it, and decide how to explain its benefits. Marketing also provides ways to learn whether those choices are reaching the intended audience and producing useful responses.

  • Understand demand: Research can reveal customer needs, questions, preferences, and problems worth addressing.
  • Shape value: Customer understanding can inform what the business offers and how it makes the offer useful or distinctive.
  • Make the offer accessible: Availability, distribution, and the purchase experience affect whether interested people can act.
  • Communicate clearly: Promotion helps people discover an offering and understand its relevance, but it cannot compensate indefinitely for an offer that does not meet their needs.
  • Learn and adjust: Responses and performance information can guide improvements to the offer, customer experience, or channel mix.

These functions make marketing relevant across a business, not only to a communications or advertising team. The AMA’s definition explicitly spans creating, communicating, delivering, and exchanging value; its definition of marketing research explains how information can link the audience to business decisions. What digital marketing adds—and what it does not

Digital marketing gives businesses ways to reach and interact with audiences through websites, search engines, blogs, social media, video, email, online advertising, and search engine optimization (SEO). The AMA describes digital marketing as dynamic and interactive and notes that organizations combine methods differently; some also combine digital channels with traditional marketing. AMA, “What Is Digital Marketing?”

Digital channels can make it easier to communicate with audiences and observe certain responses, but the presence of data does not by itself show that marketing caused a business result. A click, view, or social interaction is an activity measure; it does not automatically mean a qualified prospect, sale, repeat customer, or profitable growth.

In an educational overview dated July 1, 2025, Grow with Google describes digital marketers setting goals such as increasing traffic or converting leads, then combining planning, data, and creativity. It also discusses AI as an evolving influence. This is a company educational resource, not evidence that a particular channel or AI tool will deliver a guaranteed outcome. How to choose channels for your business

There is no universally best marketing channel established by these sources. A sensible choice depends on the business’s goal, audience, resources, customer journey, and ability to assess results. A business might use several channels together—for example, a website to explain an offer, search to help people discover it, and email to communicate with people who have opted in.

  1. Set a business goal. Decide whether the priority is awareness, qualified leads, purchases, repeat business, or another outcome. Specify what change would count as progress.
  2. Identify the audience and context. Consider who needs the offering, what questions they have, and where they are likely to look for information or make a decision.
  3. Match the channel to the customer journey. A channel that helps people discover a business may serve a different purpose from one that supports evaluation or follow-up.
  4. Account for cost and capacity. Include both money and staff time. A channel is not practical if the business cannot maintain it or respond to the interest it generates.
  5. Choose a meaningful measure. Connect channel activity to a relevant outcome, such as qualified inquiries, completed purchases, retention, or revenue, rather than relying only on reach or clicks.
  6. Review the mix. Assess how channels work together and adjust based on what the business learns. Do not assume that a result observed alongside a campaign was necessarily caused by it.

The AMA’s overview of digital marketing notes that businesses vary in how they combine digital and traditional approaches. The right mix is therefore a business decision, not a contest in which one category must always win. AMA, “What Is Digital Marketing?”

How to judge whether marketing is working

Start with the result the business wants, then distinguish that result from the activities used to pursue it. Views, impressions, clicks, and connections can help describe exposure or interaction; they are not interchangeable with qualified leads, conversions, retention, or revenue. The relevant measures depend on the goal and the business model.

Interpret results carefully. A campaign may coincide with more sales without being the sole cause: seasonality, pricing, product changes, competitors, and other factors can also influence outcomes. The sources cited here do not establish a universal return-on-investment benchmark or a measurement method that applies to every business. Businesses should use measures suited to their objectives and be cautious about attributing results.

What industry figures can—and cannot—tell you

Industry-wide figures illustrate the scale of marketing activity, but they do not predict what one company’s marketing will achieve. The AMA says its estimates draw on Bureau of Labor Statistics and LinkedIn data and reports 2.5 million marketers in the United States and at least 6.5 million globally, based on information gathered in summer and fall 2024. Those figures describe the profession, not the contribution marketing makes to an individual firm’s growth. AMA, “Marketing Industry Stats and Information”

Google reports that in 2025 its Search, Play, Cloud, YouTube, and advertising tools contributed $947 billion in U.S. economic activity. Google also reports more than 2.5 billion monthly direct connections at no cost in 2025—including calls, direction requests, messages, bookings, and reviews—and says more than 19.5 million American businesses used its no-cost tools to receive customer connections that year. These are Google’s own reported figures and measures, not independent estimates of the causal effect of marketing or expected results for a particular business. Google Economic Impact – U.S. Impact
