Maple Finance announced a $5 million strategic funding round on August 22, 2023, to support a multi-year growth plan that included expansion into Asia-Pacific and Latin America. Contemporary coverage focused on Hong Kong and Singapore, where Maple said it saw institutional demand, active trading and regulatory support. The announcement described plans—not proof that local hiring or trade-finance deals were later completed.

What Maple announced

Maple said BlockTower Capital and Tioga Capital led the round. Room40 Ventures, Cherry Crypto, Spartan Capital, GSR Ventures and Veris Ventures participated; Maven 11 and Framework Ventures also committed, according to Maple’s August 22, 2023 announcement. The company framed the funding as support for a multi-year effort to grow beyond decentralized finance (DeFi) into traditional finance as a lending marketplace and technology platform.

The company announcement named both APAC and LATAM as areas in its roadmap. TechCrunch’s report the following day focused on Asia, particularly Hong Kong and Singapore, as markets Maple was considering for its expansion.

Why Maple saw an opportunity in Hong Kong and Singapore

Maple CEO and co-founder Sidney Powell pointed to existing trading activity, borrowers from the region and what he viewed as regulatory support. He told TechCrunch: “In Asia, you have regulatory clarity, or rather, regulatory support, both coming out of Hong Kong and Singapore in terms of new legislation that’s come through, and you already have a very heavy trading focus over there.”

That was Powell’s characterization in 2023, not an independent legal assessment. It should not be read as saying the two jurisdictions had identical rules or that Maple had permission to conduct every kind of lending activity there. The report captured Maple’s business rationale at the time, not a legal conclusion about operating requirements.

How the Asia plan related to Maple’s lending business

TechCrunch described Maple as an on-chain institutional credit marketplace, where lenders could observe loan operations on-chain. It also reported that Maple Direct, the company’s direct-lending arm at the time, offered overcollateralized loans secured by Bitcoin, Ether and staked Ether. Those descriptions reflect 2023 reporting and should not be assumed to describe current loan terms.

Maple connected its regional ambitions to trade finance for real-world businesses, including potential loans to finance commodity shipments. Powell said Maple had received pitches for trade-finance deals and hoped to develop business relationships in Hong Kong and Singapore. The company announcement also described plans for partnerships with protocols, financial-services providers and credit professionals. These were opportunities and intentions, not evidence of completed transactions.

What the announcement does—and does not—show

  • Funding: Maple announced a $5 million strategic round on August 22, 2023, led by BlockTower Capital and Tioga Capital.
  • Roadmap: The company named APAC and LATAM in its broader multi-year plan; contemporary coverage emphasized Hong Kong and Singapore.
  • Execution: The reporting described hoped-for regional hiring and trade-finance opportunities. It does not establish that Maple completed the hiring or originated those deals.
  • Regulation: The “regulatory support” rationale was Powell’s view in 2023, not a regulator’s statement or a substitute for jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

Maple’s later reported scale, in context

Later company figures provide context about Maple’s business, but do not verify the results of the Asia plan. In an August 20, 2026 memo, Maple reported $6.4 billion in H1 originations and $12.2 million in H1 revenue. Its About page, accessed October 8, 2026, reported $4.84 billion in assets under management and $26.19 billion in amount borrowed. These are company-reported figures from different pages and reporting contexts; they are not evidence that the specific 2023 hiring or trade-finance plans were carried out.
