Low liquidity means there is not much crypto available to trade near the current price. A large market order can use up the best-priced orders and fill the rest at worse prices; an automated-market-maker (AMM) swap can move the pool price as it changes the pool’s asset balances. Check the spread, estimated average fill, and liquidity for the exact trading pair before placing an order. A limit order can cap the price you will accept, but it may not fill.
What slippage is—and how it differs from the spread
Slippage is the difference between the price you expected when placing a trade and the price at which it actually executes. It can be unfavorable or favorable. The spread is the gap between the available buy and sell quotes. A trade can incur the spread even when its execution price does not move, then experience additional slippage if available liquidity is consumed or the market moves before the trade completes. Coinbase explains these terms and its conversion pricing in its slippage and spread guide.
Why low liquidity can worsen a crypto fill
On an order-book exchange
An order book lists resting buy and sell orders at different prices. A market buy takes available sell orders, starting with the lowest ask; a market sell takes buy orders, starting with the highest bid. The best quote may cover only a small quantity. If the order is larger than that quantity, the remainder matches against less favorable prices farther down the book. Your average fill across all portions can therefore differ from the quote or last-traded price you saw when submitting.
Coinbase Markets’ trading rules note that a market order can fill at a less favorable price than the most recent trade, depending on the book’s volume and prices. This describes market-order mechanics, not a prediction of how much any particular trade will slip. See Coinbase Markets Trading Rules.

On an AMM decentralized exchange
An AMM swap is priced from the assets in a liquidity pool rather than by matching against a conventional visible order book. The swap changes the pool’s balance ratio, so a larger trade relative to the pool’s liquidity has greater price impact. A quoted price can consequently differ from the final execution price. Binance Academy’s slippage guide discusses both order-book and AMM settings; exact routing and interface behavior vary by DEX.
What makes the effect larger
- Thin depth near the current price: less quantity is available at the best quotes, so an order consumes more price levels.
- A large order relative to available liquidity: even a usually active pair may not have enough nearby depth for a particular trade.
- Low activity or a moving market: quotes and available size can change while an order is being processed.
- The particular pair and venue: liquidity varies by asset, pair, platform, and time; a venue’s headline volume alone does not show the depth available for your order.
How to reduce slippage before placing a trade
- Inspect the exact pair and venue. Look at the buy and sell quotes and, where available, the order-book depth near the price. Do not assume a coin’s activity on another pair or platform tells you what your order can execute against here.
- Preview the estimated average price and costs. Compare the estimate with the quote or price you expected, and account for the spread separately. Treat estimates as a snapshot: they can change as prices and available quantities move. Coinbase describes its own conversion display and market-order estimates in its slippage and spread documentation; displays differ across platforms.
- Choose an order type to match your priority. Use a market order when immediate execution matters more than controlling the exact price. Consider a limit order when price control matters more than getting filled immediately.
- For a large order, assess size and urgency. A smaller order or a schedule that divides execution into portions may reduce immediate consumption of nearby depth, but later portions face changing prices and additional executions may affect total fees. Only use this approach if the timing and market risk suit you.
- For a DEX swap, review price impact and slippage tolerance. Tolerance is the maximum deviation you accept before the transaction is rejected; it does not add liquidity or guarantee a good price. A tight setting can cause a swap to fail, while a loose one permits a worse execution. Labels and defaults depend on the DEX.
Which execution approach fits your priority?
| Approach | Potential advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Market order | Prioritizes execution against currently available liquidity. | Can fill across multiple prices; the final average may be less favorable than the initial quote. |
| Limit order | Sets the maximum price you will pay to buy or the minimum price you will accept to sell. | May remain open or fill only in part. Coinbase’s order guidance explains that its limit orders fill at the specified price or better; this is not a promise of completion. See Coinbase order management. |
| Smaller or scheduled executions | Can spread an order over time instead of consuming as much nearby depth at once. Coinbase describes TWAP as splitting an order into smaller executions scheduled over time. | Does not guarantee a target price or eliminate market risk; later executions may face changed prices and fees. Availability and design are platform-specific. See Coinbase order types. |
| DEX slippage tolerance | Rejects a swap if execution deviates beyond the limit you set. | Does not improve pool liquidity. Too tight a limit can fail; too loose a limit allows a worse execution. |
There is no universally best method: weigh price control against the chance of a complete fill, execution speed against time exposed to market moves, and the actual depth and spread for the pair. For a DEX, also consider the pool’s expected price impact and the tolerance setting. Platform features and availability can vary by product and jurisdiction.
