Why KLM Went to Germany for De-Icing Fluid During Schiphol’s January 2026 Disruption

KLM said intense winter operations strained its Schiphol de-icing fluid supply, prompting a collection trip to Germany. Its official updates do not verify nearly 2,400 cancellations as a KLM-only total.

KLM said it went to Germany to collect de-icing fluid after intense winter operations strained its Schiphol supply and its supplier could not guarantee timely replenishment. The airline’s dated updates report large, changing cancellation counts, but the available figures do not verify that KLM itself cancelled nearly 2,400 flights. That number should not be treated as a KLM total.

Why did KLM go to Germany for de-icing fluid?

On January 6, 2026, KLM said severe winter conditions had put its de-icing fluid stock at Schiphol under pressure. The airline said its Germany-based supplier could not guarantee that replenishment would arrive on time, so KLM arranged to collect a new supply itself. At 9 p.m. that day, KLM said it was returning to the Netherlands with the fluid; by 10 a.m. on January 7, it reported that the first supply had arrived and that more than 100,000 liters were on the way. KLM’s operational updates

KLM described the de-icing mixture as heated water and glycol. It is applied to remove snow and ice before departure; KLM said aircraft must be completely clear of snow and ice to take off safely. This is an aviation operation, not a shortage of automotive antifreeze or a product passengers can address themselves.

How much fluid and equipment did KLM report?

In its January 6 update, KLM said it had used approximately 85,000 liters of de-icing mixture per day over the preceding days. It reported 25 de-icing trucks in continuous use since January 2 and more than 100 employees on the de-icing team. These are KLM’s figures for the acute period, not a general daily usage rate.

How many KLM flights were cancelled?

KLM’s official timeline gives dated snapshots, not a reconciled final cumulative total. It listed 295 cancellations for January 4. For January 5, an earlier update said 124 flights were scheduled to be cancelled, while a later update gave a figure of 300. KLM then said nearly 300 were planned for January 6 and 600 for January 7. The airline also later reported 80 proactive cancellations for January 9. Because these are updates about different dates and plans, they should not simply be added into one verified total.

A Reuters report carried by Air Freight News said KLM had cancelled at least 300 flights on January 6 and described its effort to collect fluid in Germany. That report is consistent with a major KLM disruption but does not establish a cumulative KLM total of nearly 2,400. Air Freight News / Reuters report

Why do some reports give much larger figures?

Some prominent totals refer to Schiphol as a whole, including flights operated by airlines other than KLM. The Associated Press reported roughly 600 flights grounded at Schiphol on January 6, an airport-wide figure. NL Times reported about 3,500 scheduled flights cancelled across airlines since the previous Friday. Neither figure is a KLM-only cancellation count. Associated Press; NL Times

The distinctions matter: an airport-wide count is not an airline count, and a planned or announced cancellation figure may be a snapshot rather than the final number of flights actually cancelled. The sources available do not verify “nearly 2,400” as KLM’s cumulative total.

Was the fluid shortage the only cause of the disruption?

No. In an April 28, 2026 joint update, KLM and Schiphol summarized an independent Oliver Wyman evaluation that described a combination of weather and operational factors. Snow began earlier and fell more heavily than forecast, increasing demand for de-icing and lengthening handling times. The evaluation also found that flight volumes proved difficult to reduce quickly enough, and that operational decisions and scaling came later than needed. The account does not identify the fluid shortage as the sole cause. KLM and Schiphol’s April 28 update

What did KLM and Schiphol say they would improve?

Their joint update identified stronger joint winter readiness, better passenger support and communication, and increased de-icing capacity as improvement areas. The published summary describes priorities and plans; it does not establish that every measure was fully implemented by April 28, 2026.

What should passengers do during a similar disruption?

For a current disruption, check the airline’s official flight-status and rebooking channels rather than relying on an older cancellation tally. During the January disruption, KLM warned passengers about impersonation scams and advised them to verify the sender and contact the airline only through official channels, including klm.com or the KLM app. Avoid links or requests for payment sent by unsolicited messages.
