Justin Sun did not pay $6.2 million for an ordinary banana. In November 2024, the TRON founder paid that reported total at a Sotheby’s auction for Comedian, Maurizio Cattelan’s conceptual artwork: a certificate granting the right to reproduce a banana duct-taped to a wall. The auction hammer price was $5.2 million; fees brought the total to about $6.2 million. Nine days later, Sun ate a banana at a Hong Kong press conference.
What did Justin Sun buy for $6.2 million?
Sun won the November 20, 2024, Sotheby’s New York auction for an edition of Comedian, a work by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan. The piece became widely discussed after debuting at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019.
The headline figure is the all-in price, not the auction’s hammer price. The Associated Press reported a $5.2 million hammer price plus about $1 million in auction-house fees, for a reported total of $6.2 million. The Associated Press account of the sale gives both figures.
Was the $6.2 million purchase really just a banana?
No. The fruit was a replaceable part of the installation, not the valuable object conveyed by the sale. According to Sotheby’s head of contemporary art, David Galperin, the buyer received a certificate of authenticity and permission and authority to reproduce the work, along with installation materials and instructions. Galperin explained that the owner can reproduce “this banana and duct tape on their wall as an original artwork by Maurizio Cattelan.” The San Francisco Chronicle reported his explanation of what the buyer acquired: the certificate and reproduction authority.

That distinction explains why eating the fruit did not destroy Sun’s purchase. The artwork’s identity rests on the certificate and the authorized installation, rather than on keeping one particular banana intact.
Why did Sun eat the banana?
After the auction, Sun said he would eat the banana as part of the artistic experience, “honoring its place in both art history and popular culture.” On November 29, 2024, he ate a banana during a press conference at The Peninsula Hong Kong. The Associated Press reported that the fruit eaten at the event had been bought in Hong Kong, rather than being the original auction banana. Sun remarked, “It tastes much better than other bananas. Indeed, quite good.”

How does the price compare with earlier sales?
The $6.2 million total was far above the historical prices reported for earlier editions, but the figures are not directly interchangeable: the earlier range is not the price of this 2024 auction. The Associated Press reported that three earlier editions sold for $120,000 to $150,000, citing the gallery that handled sales at the time.
Who sold the original banana, and what happened to Sun’s pledge?
The Art Newspaper reported that Shah Alam, the vendor who initially sold the auction banana for $0.25, was the subject of Sun’s pledge to buy 100,000 bananas from him. That report establishes the pledge; it does not establish that the purchase was completed. The Art Newspaper’s account of the Hong Kong event and pledge describes both.

What happened to Comedian after its 2019 debut?
The work drew attention and controversy at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019. The Associated Press reported that another artist removed and ate the banana, after which the work was withdrawn from view amid the attention. That episode also illustrates why the banana itself is not the enduring part of the work: it can be replaced while the certified artwork remains reproducible.
