Jota Peleteiro said he retired from professional football at 30 after losing motivation—not because he had publicly secured a fortune. His later work with agricultural technology company Groinn and a UK company-control filing help explain the “ridiculously rich” claim, but neither establishes his personal net worth. A 2024 forecast for Groinn is a business projection, not money shown to have been earned or paid to him.

Who is Jota, and when did he retire?

Jota is José Ignacio Peleteiro Ramallo, a Spanish midfielder—not Portuguese forward Diogo Jota. Aston Villa announced his signing from Birmingham City on 5 June 2019, on a two-year deal for an undisclosed fee. The Premier League reported that he had made 41 appearances and scored three goals for Birmingham in the preceding season; earlier, he scored 12 goals in 19 matches during a Brentford spell under Dean Smith. Those are specific spell or season figures, not career totals. Premier League: Aston Villa sign midfielder Jota.

In an interview published by Relevo on 12 October 2022, Peleteiro said, “Estoy retirado” (“I am retired”). He said he had been out of professional football for more than a year and decided not to continue after the 2020–21 season with Deportivo Alavés. He was 30 when he made that decision; some later coverage calls him 31 because he had turned 31 by the time retirement was reported. Relevo interview.

Why did he stop playing?

Peleteiro described a loss of ambition during the Alavés season. He said he did not want to continue solely for money, without motivation. He considered a move to Saudi Arabia, but told his family he would not go, contacted the club to apologize and say he would not sign, and said he felt liberated by the choice.

He also reflected that he might have played another five or six years and earned a lot. In his account, continuing without the desire to play would have been dishonest to himself. That is his explanation for retiring; it is not evidence that he had already reached a particular level of wealth.

What is behind the claim that he is “ridiculously rich”?

The wealth narrative largely draws on Peleteiro’s business role at Groinn and ambitious projections reported for the company. Exame described him in January 2024 as Groinn’s CEO and a significant investor. The La Coruña-based agricultural technology startup was described as using sensors, AI and software to monitor crops and agricultural land; the system had reportedly been operating since September 2023. Exame’s Groinn report.

Exame reported a forecast that Groinn could exceed R$6 billion in profit within three years. That is a projected company profit, not an audited result, a company valuation, or an amount Peleteiro is known to have received. The report does not establish that the forecast was achieved.

A Companies House record for GROINN UK LTD names Jose Ignacio Peleteiro Ramallo as an active person with significant control. The filing, notified on 16 April 2024, records ownership of 75% or more of the company’s shares and voting rights, as well as the right to appoint or remove directors. This supports a claim of substantial control of that named UK company at the time of the filing. It does not show the company’s value, the extent of his holdings elsewhere, or his personal net worth. In a March 2024 interview, Peleteiro said Groinn had three government agreements intended to begin using its technology in 2024. That interview records his statement about agreements and planned deployment; it does not independently confirm that each deployment took place. Agrodiario interview.

What the available figures do—and do not—show

Figure or record What it describes What it does not establish
75% or more of shares and voting rights GROINN UK LTD control information notified to Companies House on 16 April 2024. The company’s valuation, Peleteiro’s total assets, or his personal net worth.
More than R$6 billion in profit within three years Groinn’s projected profit, as reported by Exame in January 2024. Profit already earned, cash distributed to owners, or personal wealth.
Three government agreements intended for 2024 deployment Peleteiro’s statement in a March 2024 interview. Independent confirmation that all deployments happened or generated revenue.

The reviewed sources do not provide a reliable personal net-worth figure for Peleteiro. It would therefore be misleading to call him a billionaire or to treat Groinn’s projected profit as his personal fortune. The evidence supports a more limited conclusion: he retired from football by choice, later became a significant figure in an agtech business, and has a documented controlling interest in the UK company named in the filing.
