JOANN filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy twice in less than a year. It first restructured its debt and emerged in April 2024, but filed again on January 15, 2025, seeking a sale of its assets. The second case progressed to store-closing sales, an auction, and liquidation of the business. JOANN attributed the repeat filing to retail headwinds, constrained inventory, liquidity problems, and difficulty servicing debt after its first restructuring.

Why JOANN filed again
JOANN’s January 2025 announcement cited persistent retail challenges, its financial position, and constrained inventory. In a declaration filed in the second case, the company said retail headwinds and inventory and liquidity difficulties left it unable to service its post-emergence funded debt and continue as a going concern. The declaration also pointed to inflation and high interest rates, shoppers prioritizing essentials and lower-cost goods over discretionary crafts and décor, and price competition. These are JOANN’s explanations of its circumstances, not a court finding that any one factor alone caused the liquidation.
What the 2024 restructuring did—and did not do
The first Chapter 11 case was a negotiated, prepackaged restructuring. JOANN said it reduced funded debt by half and replaced previously announced debtor-in-possession financing with a $153 million exit financing facility when it emerged on April 30, 2024. Those are the company’s descriptions of the transaction; the debt reduction is not a stated dollar amount. JOANN’s emergence announcement

The process did not prevent a second bankruptcy filing less than nine months later. In January 2025, the company asked the court to oversee a sale rather than announce another debt restructuring intended to preserve the business. The initial plan to keep stores and the website open during the sale process was not the final outcome.
What happened to JOANN stores and the business
In February 2025, JOANN sought authority for store-closing sales and the disposition of inventory, fixtures, furniture, and equipment. An auction followed, and the selected buyers planned a wind-down that included going-out-of-business sales at all store locations. The court’s June 2026 opinion later described the sale to a liquidator and liquidation of the business. Store-closing motion · AP report and court opinion

The available materials do not establish a final recovery for unsecured creditors or the complete value realized in liquidation.

JOANN’s bankruptcy record explains the company’s closure, but it does not establish a comprehensive current directory of fabric, quilting, sewing, or craft suppliers to replace its local assortment. Check a retailer’s current store locator and online inventory before making a trip or relying on availability. The cited materials do not show that Michaels or another retailer bought JOANN’s stores.
