What happened in the Jiji–Cars45 deal?
TechCabal reported on June 28, 2021, that Jiji had acquired Cars45. The companies said their operations would merge in Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana. Neither the reported coverage nor the announcement disclosed a purchase price. TechCabal’s June 2021 report covered the acquisition and its strategic rationale.
The deal was more than an expansion of Jiji’s listings. Cars45 offered an online-to-offline car buying and selling service: sellers could sell to dealers or through a consumer marketplace, with physical inspection centres supporting the online process. In the announcement, Jiji CEO and co-founder Anton Volyansky called it the company’s “first bold step into the transactional business model.” The companies’ announcement described the combination and its intended scope.
Why did Jiji want Cars45?
Jiji’s stated logic was to carry its strength in classifieds into adjacent businesses where the platform could play a role in the transaction itself. Co-founder Vladimir Mnogoletniy said Jiji saw limited room to grow by acquiring more classified businesses, and was more interested in adjacent models that could bring it exposure to transactional marketplaces. Cars45 offered a way to test that direction in used cars.
In practical terms, classifieds help people find listings and contact sellers; a transactional marketplace can add processes that help a sale move forward. Jiji brought online audience and marketplace experience, while Cars45 brought an operating model with offline inspection capability. Cars45 CEO Soumobroto Ganguly described the logic as combining online and offline expertise.
What Cars45 added to Jiji’s car marketplace
The 2021 announcement highlighted inspection centres, vehicle condition reports and checks against databases. It also said Cars45 inspections covered more than 200 parameters, a company-reported service detail attributed to Jiji CFO David Ojo—not an independently audited measure. These features were part of the service proposition; they should not be read as an independent guarantee that a car is safe, accurately described or free of problems.
The combined approach differed from a listings-only experience in several ways:

This distinction explains why the deal mattered strategically: it gave Jiji an entry point into services around a purchase, rather than only discovery. It does not establish that the combined model produced better prices, safer cars or higher sales; the available sources do not provide independently verified post-acquisition outcomes.

What later references say—and what they do not establish
A 2023 ThisDay report described Cars45 by Jiji inspection and verification centres in Nigeria as part of a Suzuki by CFAO partnership. That is a dated example of the combined brand and service proposition, not evidence that the partnership continues today. ThisDay’s report on the partnership documents that example.
The African Competition Forum’s November 2024 landscape study lists Jiji among general classified platforms and refers to its acquisitions of OLX and Cars45. It also notes that automotive classified markets differ by country and that many platforms are local. That supports a picture of varied, country-specific markets; it does not quantify Cars45’s current market share. The African Competition Forum study provides this regional context.
A Cars45 Nigeria LinkedIn post says the brand was adopting the Cars45 name again. A brand reference or social post does not determine the company’s legal structure, ownership arrangements or current operations in each country. The Cars45 Nigeria post signals use of the name, but not those underlying details.

For buyers, the deal’s relevance is the service model it introduced into Jiji’s strategy: a listing marketplace combined with inspection and other offline capabilities. Those services can add information beyond a seller’s description, but the announcement alone cannot tell a buyer how a particular vehicle would perform or whether a given inspection is available now.

- Check whether inspection or verification is currently offered in the country and location where you are shopping.
- Ask what an inspection covers and request the written report for the specific vehicle.
- Treat a report as one input, not a substitute for checking ownership documents, taking a test drive and arranging an independent mechanic’s assessment when appropriate.
The sources available establish the 2021 strategy and later instances of Cars45 branding and activity; they do not establish the service’s present availability country by country.
