James Bord’s consortium said it withdrew from the Sheffield Wednesday takeover after due diligence showed its offer was too high. Separate reports described difficult EFL checks and missing documentation, but do not establish those issues as the reason the consortium pulled out.
What reason did James Bord’s consortium give for withdrawing?
The consortium’s public explanation was valuation. In a statement quoted by The Guardian on 25 February 2026, a spokesperson said: “The figure we offered is significantly higher than that justified by the findings of a lengthy due diligence process.” The Guardian reported that an additional PwC due-diligence report had led the group to that conclusion.

In practical terms, the consortium said its assessment of the club’s value after reviewing the information did not support the amount it had offered. BBC Sport reported that the agreement’s terms meant the group could not renegotiate its offer downward after the valuation was considered lower than the original bid.
Were EFL checks the reason the bid failed?
They were a reported complication, but the available accounts do not show that they caused the withdrawal. BBC Sport’s 25 February report said financial and background checks had been particularly challenging and significant documentation remained outstanding when the consortium withdrew. Those facts provide context around the process; they are not the consortium’s stated explanation.

Earlier, The Guardian reported on 30 January that the EFL was assessing the consortium’s funding source and its compliance with owners-and-directors requirements. The bidders’ advisers described the bid as privately funded and said the money came from investments in technology and analytics, but declined to provide further detail. The Guardian also reported scrutiny of consortium members’ gambling-related business backgrounds.
The distinction matters: reports about checks, funding questions and outstanding paperwork do not prove that the EFL rejected the consortium or that any single compliance issue triggered its decision. The public explanation reported at the time was that due diligence made the offer too high.

How much did James Bord’s consortium offer?
Contemporaneous reports give different figures. They should be attributed to the outlet reporting them rather than treated as a single reconciled sale price.
| Report | Bid figure | How it was described |
|---|---|---|
| The Guardian, 25 February 2026 | Around £40m | The amount the consortium was understood to have bid; the report compared it with an earlier reported figure of £32.5m. |
| The Guardian, 25 February 2026 | £32.5m | An earlier reported figure used for comparison with the later around-£40m account. |
| BBC Sport, 25 February 2026 | £47.8m | The reported value of the proposed takeover. |
The figures differ, and the reports do not reconcile them against a published sale contract. None should be presented as a definitive, agreed purchase price.

What happened after the Bord-led bid collapsed?
Sheffield Wednesday’s takeover process continued with a different bidder. On 11 March 2026, BBC Sport reported that Arise Capital Partners, led by David Storch, had become the new preferred bidder. The report said its offer did not meet the EFL’s 25p-per-pound creditor repayment requirement.
On 2 May 2026, the EFL confirmed an agreement with Arise Capital Partners LLC, a consortium led by David Storch alongside Michael Storch and Tom Costin, for the transfer of club assets and new ownership. BBC Sport also reported completion that day.
