The key question is not just whether the forecast is higher than before, but whether it is better than investors expected—and what the share price already reflected. A rally shows the market’s reaction at that moment; it does not prove that growth will continue or that the stock is undervalued.
Why a raised forecast can move a stock higher
Share prices respond to new information relative to expectations. If investors expected weaker results, an improved outlook can be welcome news even when the latest quarter was mixed. The reverse is also possible: a company can beat quarterly estimates but fall if its forecast disappoints or points to new risks. Charles Schwab’s 2026 explanation notes that forward-looking guidance can be a major near-term price driver: “Though guidance usually appears near the bottom of a company’s earnings release, it can often be the top factor in determining near-term share price.”
Compare the new forecast with both the company’s previous guidance and analyst expectations available before the announcement. A raised range may still be below consensus; a modest revision can beat expectations if investors had anticipated worse. The market’s expectations may also be reflected in the share price before the release, so the size of a forecast increase alone cannot explain the reaction.
S&P Global summarized a study of U.S. earnings-per-share guidance announcements from January 2003 through February 2015. The study summary reports positive excess returns for companies issuing guidance above consensus estimates or prior guidance. It does not establish a specific effect for IT-services stocks, quantify a universal price move, or show that gains persist: S&P Global’s summary of the guidance study.

What to check in the earnings announcement
1. Compare old guidance, new guidance, and consensus
Write down the old and new forecast ranges and compare them with analyst consensus as it stood before the announcement. Then check the reported quarter separately. Earnings may beat estimates while the outlook falls short, or the quarter may disappoint while management’s forward forecast improves.
2. Find the stated reason for the change
Read the earnings release and management’s remarks for the driver they identify. Depending on the company, relevant details may include customer demand, contract or bookings measures, project timing, pricing, utilization, or delivery capacity. Treat management’s explanation as the company’s account, not independent proof that the factor caused the revision.

For example, ServiceNow said its Q2 2026 subscription-revenue outlook was raised because of strength in net-new annual contract value. That is an explanation for one company’s revision, not a rule about IT-services stocks generally: ServiceNow’s Q2 2026 results release.
3. Look beyond the headline revenue or earnings figure
Review the operating measures the company reports, especially profitability and cash generation alongside growth. Which measures matter most depends on the business model, so compare the company’s own outlook across multiple indicators rather than treating one metric as decisive.

- Palantir’s release reported raised outlooks for revenue, U.S. commercial revenue, adjusted operating income, and adjusted free cash flow.
These examples show why the full outlook can give more context than a single earnings headline. They are examples from different technology businesses, not a representative sample of IT-services companies. ServiceNow’s release and Palantir’s Q2 2026 results release provide the companies’ reported measures.
4. Check how the numbers are presented
Look for constant-currency assumptions, acquisitions, unusual items, and adjusted or non-GAAP definitions. Compare equivalent measures, and read the company’s explanations and reconciliations. An adjusted measure is not automatically equivalent to a GAAP result or to cash generated by the business. The SEC’s guidance on non-GAAP financial measures explains the reporting context.

5. Read the primary disclosures
Start with the earnings release and the public earnings call, then consult the company’s SEC filings for fuller context. Look for the assumptions and qualifications behind the forecast, not only the headline change. The SEC’s investor guidance recommends researching company reports and analyst conflicts rather than relying solely on a recommendation: Investor.gov’s guide to researching investments.

A stock rising after a forecast revision means investors responded positively at that time. It does not establish that the shares are attractively valued or that the forecast will be achieved. The SEC notes that analyst recommendations can influence prices, sometimes temporarily even without a recent change in a company’s prospects or fundamentals. For a particular stock, assess the announcement alongside its valuation, latest filings, guidance, consensus baseline, and price context rather than treating a one-day move as a verdict: SEC Investor.gov’s investment-research guidance.
