A Zelle payment marked pending may mean the recipient has not enrolled the email address or U.S. mobile number you used. Check the payment activity in the bank or credit union account that sent it, then verify the recipient’s enrollment and contact details. Zelle says payments to enrolled recipients typically arrive within minutes; for a payment still unresolved after more than three days, it recommends checking those details and contacting your financial institution.
What “pending” and “completed” mean
Start with the status shown in the online or mobile banking service you used to send the money. Zelle says a pending payment may mean the recipient has not enrolled the email address or U.S. mobile number used for the transfer. A completed payment means the money is already in the recipient’s bank account. If the status is unclear, ask your bank or credit union to check the transaction.
Zelle’s guidance on a payment the recipient hasn’t received explains the pending status and next checks.
Check the recipient’s enrollment and contact details
- Open payment activity. In the bank or credit union app or website used to send the money, find the Zelle payment and note its status and transaction details.
- Verify the exact email address or U.S. mobile number. Ask the recipient to confirm that the identifier you used is correct and enrolled with their Zelle profile. If it is wrong, ask your institution how to correct or address the payment; do not assume a correction can be made after sending.
- Allow for the published timing, but follow up when appropriate. Zelle says enrolled recipients typically receive payments within minutes. If more than three days have passed, Zelle recommends confirming that the recipient is fully enrolled and that the correct contact detail was given to the sender.
- Contact the sending institution if the money still is not visible. Ask the bank or credit union to trace the specific transaction, especially if the recipient confirms enrollment or the status does not clearly explain what happened.
Zelle’s timing is general guidance, not a guarantee for every transaction or every institution. The bank or credit union can review its transaction records and account-specific processing rules. See Zelle’s timing guidance.

Can you cancel a pending Zelle payment?
Cancellation depends on whether the recipient has enrolled. Zelle says a sender can cancel only if the recipient has not enrolled; once an enrolled recipient receives a payment sent to their bank account, it cannot be canceled through Zelle. Check the payment’s controls in your banking service to see whether a cancellation option is available for that transaction.
If the recipient has not enrolled, Zelle says the payment expires after 14 days if enrollment does not happen, and the funds return to the sender’s account. If the payment’s status or return timing is unclear, ask the financial institution that sent it. Zelle’s cancellation FAQ describes the conditions.

When to contact your bank or credit union
Contact the institution that handled the payment if it remains pending, the recipient is enrolled but cannot find the funds, the status is unclear, or you need to know whether cancellation is possible. Use the number on the back of your debit card or the institution’s official support channel, and provide the transaction details. Zelle says partner financial institutions handle payment-related issues when customers use Zelle through their institution’s online or mobile banking service. See Zelle support.
A general Zelle FAQ cannot identify the cause of a particular bank transaction’s delay. Do not assume that a processing label means a bank hold, fraud review, outage, transfer limit, weekend delay, or another specific cause; the institution needs to inspect the transaction to establish what applies.

Do not send the payment again until you know its status
If the original transfer is unresolved, avoid sending the same amount a second time. First check the payment activity and ask your bank or credit union whether the original is pending, completed, or otherwise restricted. A duplicate transfer could leave you trying to recover money that has already reached the recipient.
