HMV stands for His Master’s Voice. The phrase comes from a painting of a dog called Nipper listening to a phonograph, and the company that adopted it as a brand later shortened it to the three letters most shoppers know today.
What the letters stand for
The initials are shorthand for the full phrase His Master’s Voice. The phrase was never invented as a retail name. It was the title of a painting, and the company that used the painting to promote its products took the title as its own. The public then did what people usually do with long brand names and shortened it.
The painting and the dog behind it
The painting is the work of Francis Barraud, and it shows Nipper, a terrier, with his head tilted toward the horn of an early phonograph. According to the Huguenot Museum’s account of Nipper and His Master’s Voice, Nipper had belonged to Barraud’s elder brother Mark, and Francis inherited the dog after Mark died. Nipper had died before the picture was painted, so the image was built from memory and from the dog’s familiar pose rather than from a sitting.
Barraud described the idea himself. As reproduced by the Huguenot Museum, he wrote: “It suddenly occurred to me that to have my dog listening to the phonograph, with an intelligent and rather puzzled expression, and call it ‘His Master’s Voice’, would make an excellent subject”. That quotation records his own account of the idea. It is the best source for why the title was chosen, though it does not on its own document every later step of the trademark history.

How the phrase became a company brand
The painting was adopted by the British Gramophone Company, whose recordings and machines were sold under the picture’s title. The Huguenot Museum account says the British company registered the picture, together with the title His Master’s Voice, as trademarks in 1910. From that point the phrase functioned as a brand name, and it was used on records, machines and promotional material.
The EMI Archive Trust independently connects the painting, the Nipper image and the trademark, which supports the core sequence: the picture came first, and the company later built its identity around it.

Why the initials stuck
Brand names that are long and repeated in conversation tend to get clipped. His Master’s Voice is a mouthful, and HMV is easier to say, print and fit into a shop sign. The abbreviation spread through ordinary public use, and it is the form that survived into the retail era.
From the painting to the shop front
The retail story is a separate thread. HMV’s official announcement says the first HMV shop opened at 363 Oxford Street in 1921, and that the store returned to that same address on 24 November 2023. Those dates tell you about the history of the shop brand, not about where the phrase came from. The name was already in use on the trademark and the picture before the first store opened.

Who runs HMV today
HMV’s current company information page says the UK HMV name is a trading name of Sunrise Records and Entertainment Limited, so the business you shop with in the UK is a company that uses the historical name rather than the original Gramophone Company. The page describes the company’s present-day identity; it does not explain the origin of the name, which is why the painting and the trademark story belong to the historical record and the company page belongs to the current business.
Common points of confusion
- HMV is not a person’s initials. The letters are the first letters of a phrase, not the name of a founder.
- The shop did not start the name. The phrase and picture predate the first HMV store by more than a decade, based on the 1910 trademark date and the 1921 shop opening.
- Nipper merchandise is historical. Early Nipper-branded items such as needle tins appear in historical accounts of the image. Those are collectables from the past, and nothing in the sources confirms that they are sold today under any current HMV programme.
The short version
HMV is short for His Master’s Voice, the title Francis Barraud gave his painting of Nipper. The Gramophone Company’s trademark registration in 1910 turned the phrase into a brand, public usage shortened it to HMV, and the modern retail business kept the name.
