Two Amazon-looking charges do not automatically mean you paid twice for the same Prime membership. One entry may be a temporary card authorization; the other may be a Prime Video Channel, a second account’s membership, or an Amazon Pay subscription. First compare whether each transaction is pending or posted, then match it to the subscription and payment method that generated it.
This guide focuses on U.S. accounts. Amazon’s menus and refund rules can vary by country, device, and account, so labels may differ slightly.
Start by checking whether both transactions are final
Open your bank or card app and compare the status, amount, date, descriptor, card, and transaction reference for each entry. A pending transaction means the issuer has reserved funds; a posted or completed transaction means it has been finalized. If one entry is pending and the other posted, the pending item may be an authorization rather than a second settled payment.
| What you see | What it may indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| One pending entry and one posted entry | An authorization followed by the completed payment | Track the pending item with your issuer. If it disappears or reverses, it was not a second completed charge. |
| Two posted entries for the same amount close together | A possible duplicate, two accounts, or a separate payment attempt | Check Amazon transaction history and other household accounts; contact Amazon if both remain posted. |
| Different amounts | A channel, rental, digital purchase, another service, or a different billing interval | Match each amount and date to subscriptions and digital transactions. |
| Different cards | Separate memberships/accounts or a payment-method change | Identify the account and card tied to each transaction. |
| A descriptor such as “AMZN.COM/PMTS” | May be an Amazon Pay transaction; statement formatting varies by issuer | Check Amazon Pay activity as well as Amazon retail and Prime records. |
Amazon Pay says an authorization can appear as an additional charge while a payment method is being validated, and a bank may hold it for up to 7–10 business days. That is a possible window, not a guarantee for every bank or transaction. If both entries are posted, the second amount differs, or charges keep recurring, investigate rather than assuming they will drop off. Amazon Pay’s explanation of authorizations and statement entries

Common reasons for two Amazon-related charges
A Prime renewal plus an authorization
When an authorization and the final payment appear around the same time, the bank may temporarily show both. The key clue is status: one is pending and the other is posted. Amazon’s forum guidance specifically recommends checking for an authorization hold when customers report apparent duplicate Prime charges. Amazon forum guidance on apparent duplicate Prime charges
Prime plus a Prime Video Channel or another digital subscription
Prime membership and Prime Video Channels are separate subscriptions. A Prime renewal alongside a channel charge can therefore look like double billing even when each charge is for a different service. Also consider rentals, purchases, and other Amazon subscriptions, such as Music, Kindle, Kids+, or Audible. Amazon identifies Prime Video Channels as a possible source of a second charge.
A separate membership on another account
A spouse, child, roommate, or former account holder may have a separately billed membership, even if household members share some Prime benefits. Also check for another email address or phone number, a membership in another marketplace, an old account, a trial that converted to paid service, or enrollment during checkout or a Prime Video flow. Do not assume shared benefits mean a second account has no independent membership.

A payment retry or backup payment method
Check which card was charged and whether a payment method was recently replaced, expired, declined, removed, or set as a backup. Amazon Pay says it may try a backup payment method for eligible products and services when there is a payment problem. This documentation does not establish that every Prime renewal uses backup billing. Amazon Pay backup payment methods
An Amazon Pay agreement or potentially unauthorized enrollment
Amazon Pay is used by participating third-party websites and apps, so an Amazon-looking recurring charge may not be a Prime membership. If you do not recognize the charge, also consider an unwanted enrollment, another person using the card, or a potentially unauthorized transaction. A charge that cannot be found in your usual Amazon account is not by itself proof of fraud, but it deserves follow-up.
Trace each charge to an account or subscription
- Check Amazon transaction history. Sign in to the account you normally use. Open Your Account → Your Payments → Transactions and look for matching amounts and dates. Amazon staff guidance recommends this Transactions page when investigating apparent duplicate Prime billing. Amazon forum guidance
- Check Prime status. Open Manage Your Prime Membership and review the status, billing frequency, renewal date, and payment method.
- Review Channels. Open Manage Your Prime Video Channels, select Prime Video Channels, and compare active channels with the amount on your statement. The route and labels can vary with the account or device.
- Check other Amazon accounts. Ask household members to inspect their own accounts, not just whether they receive Prime benefits. Search each relevant email inbox for “Prime membership,” “Prime renewal,” “Prime Video,” and “membership payment.”
- Check Amazon Pay if the descriptor suggests it. Sign in to Amazon Pay, open Amazon Pay Activity → Merchant agreements, and look for a matching recurring authorization.
- Keep the evidence together. Save screenshots showing status, dates, amounts, descriptors, and the last four digits of the card. Note transaction or reference IDs for customer service.
Amazon’s interface can change, and paths may vary by country, app version, or account type. If you cannot find a menu, use Amazon’s account search or help center to locate the corresponding membership, payment, or subscription controls.

Take the action that matches the diagnosis
If one entry is pending
Monitor it in your bank app and ask the issuer how long it normally keeps authorizations. Amazon Pay says some banks may retain an authorization for up to 7–10 business days. If the pending entry reverses or disappears while the posted payment remains, that points to an authorization rather than two completed charges. Contact the bank if the hold lasts beyond its normal period or materially affects available funds.
If you find a Prime Video Channel you do not want
On Amazon, go to Manage Your Prime Video Channels → Prime Video Channels, find the channel, select Cancel Channel, and confirm. Amazon says the end date should appear after cancellation; if a self-service refund is offered and accepted, cancellation may take effect immediately. Cancellation does not necessarily refund earlier channel charges, so ask for a refund separately if appropriate. If the charge is an Amazon Pay recurring authorization
In Amazon Pay, open Amazon Pay Activity → Merchant agreements, select the relevant agreement, then choose Details & Support → Cancel agreement and confirm. Canceling the authorization prevents that merchant from charging through that authorization in the future; it does not necessarily cancel the underlying service or resolve a charge already completed. Contact the merchant separately if its service must also be canceled. Amazon Pay instructions for managing merchant agreements

If there are two active Prime memberships
Identify the account responsible for each payment before canceling. Cancel the membership you do not want through that account’s Prime membership controls, then request a refund separately if warranted. Save the cancellation confirmation. Avoid canceling a household member’s membership until you have confirmed which account is billed and what benefits depend on it.
If both identical charges are posted and appear to be for the same membership
Contact Amazon customer service with both transaction dates, amounts, the card’s last four digits, and the transaction/reference IDs. Ask which account and subscription each charge belongs to, whether either is a duplicate, and for cancellation of any duplicate or unauthorized membership. Request a refund for any completed duplicate payment and written confirmation of both the refund decision and cancellation. Do not send a full card number by email or post it in a public forum; Amazon Pay warns against emailing card numbers. Amazon Pay payment-safety guidance
If you never knowingly enrolled or cannot locate the charge
Ask Amazon to trace it, but check other Amazon accounts and Amazon Pay first. If you still cannot identify it, or it continues after cancellation, contact the card issuer or bank and ask how to dispute the posted charge and what deadline applies. Dispute rules vary, so act promptly rather than relying on a universal deadline. The FTC advises contacting the company, keeping written confirmation, and disputing continued unauthorized subscription charges with the issuer. FTC advice on unauthorized Prime charges

Ask for a refund separately from cancellation
Cancellation usually addresses future renewals; it does not, by itself, confirm a refund of a completed payment. Refund eligibility may depend on the service, timing, benefit use, payment route, Amazon’s current policy, and issuer rules. When you contact Amazon, provide the transaction details and state clearly whether you are asking to stop future billing, refund a completed charge, or both. Keep the case number and written response. If the transaction was made through Amazon Pay or another intermediary, follow the relevant payment and merchant process as well.
What the FTC settlement does—and does not—mean
The FTC alleged that Amazon enrolled consumers in Prime without adequate consent and made cancellation difficult. In September 2025, the FTC announced a $2.5 billion settlement, including $1.5 billion in consumer redress and a civil penalty. The allegations and settlement are relevant context for unwanted enrollment complaints, but they do not prove that any particular pair of charges is a duplicate or that every customer is owed a refund. FTC case summary · FTC settlement announcement
As of August 18, 2026, the FTC’s refund information says eligible U.S. Prime customers may receive up to $51 under specified criteria. This program concerns alleged unwanted enrollment or failed cancellation during the covered period; it is not a general refund for every duplicate-looking charge. Check the FTC’s current eligibility information directly, and do not pay anyone who promises special access to a settlement refund. FTC Amazon refund information
