The latest official fare data show the inflation-adjusted average domestic fare was $445 in the second quarter, up 2.0% from the first quarter. That quarterly change is an observation, not a prediction for the rest of the year.
What the latest U.S. airfare data show
The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) reported an inflation-adjusted average domestic fare of $445 in Q2 2026, compared with $436 in Q1, a 2.0% quarter-to-quarter increase. The figures were released September 29, 2026; BTS reported the change between quarters, not a forecast for the full-year average. BTS’s Q2 2026 fare release also notes that ticket sampling changed from 10% to 40% beginning July 1, 2025. That break in collection method matters when interpreting trends that span Q3 2025.
The national average is not a quote for a particular flight. DOT’s quarterly city-pair averages include first-class fares, taxes, and airport fees, but exclude award tickets and charges such as baggage, seat upgrades, and change fees. The agency cautions that prices fluctuate constantly, so reported averages may not match current ticket prices. DOT’s explanation of its Domestic Airfare Consumer Report describes what the averages do and do not capture.
Why fares may face upward pressure
Fuel costs
Fuel is a major airline expense, and higher fuel costs can put pressure on fares when carriers seek to recoup them through ticket revenue. The International Air Transport Association’s June 2026 outlook links higher passenger fares to airlines’ efforts to cover higher fuel costs. Its outlook is global, however, not a quantified forecast for U.S. fares. IATA’s June 2026 global outlook discusses fuel pressures alongside other conditions facing the industry.

Available seats and schedules
Capacity—the number of seats airlines make available—also affects pricing pressure. IATA describes capacity constraints in its global outlook. In a U.S.-specific example, United Airlines said in a July 15, 2026, investor update filed with the SEC that it might moderate near-term capacity if fuel remained elevated. That is one carrier’s stated response, not evidence that every airline will make the same scheduling decision. United’s July 2026 update said the company expected to recover 80%–90% of fuel-price increases in Q3 2026 and 100% by Q4 2026. Those percentages are company guidance for United, not a market-wide forecast.
Fees can increase the cost beyond the ticket price
A fare can rise in practice even when a comparison focuses only on the base ticket. Airlines may sell checked bags, meals, seat selection, priority boarding, and internet access separately. The FAA’s long-range forecast discusses these ancillary sales and the unbundling of airline products. The FAA’s 2026–2046 aerospace forecast helps explain why the total cost of a trip may not be reflected in a base-fare quote.

What this means when comparing flights
Because the national average leaves out some add-on charges and cannot predict the price of a specific itinerary, compare options using the same travel needs. Check the full trip cost, including any baggage, seat, or change fees that apply, and account for route, airports, travel dates, flexibility, and whether a flight is nonstop or connecting. The fare you see for your own route can differ substantially from the quarterly U.S. average.

It is possible, but the available figures do not establish a precise U.S. full-year increase or guarantee that fares will keep climbing. The Q2 BTS figure is a completed-quarter average; IATA’s outlook describes global industry pressures, and United’s guidance applies to one airline. Fuel costs and constrained capacity point to upward pressure, while a traveler’s actual price will depend on the specific itinerary and the conditions affecting it. No source cited here establishes a percentage change that applies to all U.S. fares for 2026.
