(TSMC) were discussing a possible collaboration. The comment raised the possibility that Intel’s announced role in the Texas project could be less exclusive, but it did not confirm a deal or show that Intel had been removed.
What Musk said—and what he did not confirm
Reports of TSMC-Terafab discussions surfaced on October 2. Musk addressed them in a post on X on October 3, saying, “Just discussions, but something may come of it,” according to Tom’s Hardware. That confirms talks were taking place; it is not evidence of a signed agreement.
As of October 7, 2026, the reporting reviewed had not established a formal TSMC-Terafab deal, a project ownership arrangement, or a change to Intel’s role. TSMC’s potential contribution and the terms of any collaboration remain unknown.
Why the possibility concerned Intel investors
Intel’s role could look less exclusive
Intel had already been publicly associated with Terafab. Reporting said Intel was expected to provide its 14A process, while an April Intel announcement, as summarized by Benzinga, described chip-design, manufacturing and advanced-packaging capabilities.
#1 Best Overall
- Next‑Gen Platform Support: Compatible with Intel 800 Series Chipset‑based motherboards with LGA1851 Socket enabling PCIe 5.0/4.0 and high‑speed DDR5 memory (up to 7200 MT/s).
- High‑Performance Core Configuration: Features up to 24 cores (8 P‑cores + 16 E‑cores) for demanding gaming and creator
- Ultra‑Fast Boost Clocks: Reaches up to 5.5 GHz max turbo frequency for top‑tier responsiveness and performance
- Built for Enthusiasts: Unlocked for performance tuning when paired with Intel Z‑series chipsets, making it ideal for overclockers and power users.
- Robust Power & Thermal Design: Engineered with 125W base power and 250W max turbo power to sustain high‑intensity
If TSMC also participates, investors may see Intel’s place in the project as less exclusive. That could reduce Terafab’s value as a showcase for Intel Foundry and its ability to attract customers. It is a plausible market interpretation—not confirmation that Intel has lost work, orders, revenue, or production volume. Investing.com and Tom’s Hardware framed the talks as a potential challenge to the exclusivity and signaling value of Intel’s role.
Other market context was also cited
October 5 coverage also pointed to concerns about Intel’s CPU market share and the stock’s recent strong run as factors investors were watching. Those are additional context reported by outlets, not independently established causes of that day’s move or a complete explanation of it.

How much did Intel stock fall?
| Reported move | Time window and attribution |
|---|---|
| 4.2% decline | Premarket trading on October 5, 2026, according to Investing.com. |
| 2.6% decline | Monday’s session, as described by Kiplinger. |
The figures refer to different trading windows, so they are not necessarily contradictory. They are dated snapshots of the October 5 move, not current prices or a measure of Intel’s longer-term performance. A live quote was not verified.
What Terafab’s reported goal means
Benzinga reported that Terafab aims to produce one terawatt per year of computing capacity for AI and robotics. That is a project goal, not demonstrated production capacity. The figure does not establish a production schedule, Intel’s eventual contribution, or revenue for either company.

- Compatible with Intel 600-series (with potential BIOS update) or 700-series chipset-based motherboards
- DDR4 and DDR5 platform support cuts your load times and gives you the space to run the most demanding games
What remains unresolved
- Whether TSMC and Terafab will reach a formal agreement.
- What role TSMC might take, if any: the reporting does not establish whether it would provide process technology, operate a facility, invest, or contribute in another way.
- Whether Intel’s 14A process will remain part of the project, and what volume, timing, or revenue its work might involve.
- Whether any eventual TSMC arrangement would complement or change Intel’s announced role.
Until terms are public, a meaningful comparison would require details on each company’s role, ownership and investment, operating responsibility, production timing and capacity, and any change to Intel’s position. None of those deal terms was established in the October 5–7 reporting.
