The changes were not identical: some companies removed photos or pages, while others redirected links or made profiles unavailable. The reports describe what was observed in December 2024, not the current state of those sites.
What changed on insurers’ websites
STAT reported on Dec. 6, 2024, that it compared company websites with archived versions and found changes at several organizations. The findings varied by company:
| Organization | What STAT reported on Dec. 6, 2024 |
|---|---|
| UnitedHealth | Its “Our Leaders” page had been removed; the link led to a not-found message. |
| CVS Health | Executive-team pictures had been removed. CVS confirmed the change to STAT. |
| Blue Cross Blue Shield | The About Us page no longer featured its leadership team. |
| Elevance | The Senior Leadership page redirected to the company homepage. |
| Humana | The About page no longer linked to its leadership team, and its board link led to a contact form. |
| CareSource | Leadership profile URLs returned 404 errors. |
STAT’s account describes different kinds of changes, not a single industry-wide action to remove every executive’s name.
Healthcare Dive reported additional changes: Blue Cross Blue Shield plans in North Carolina and Massachusetts had deleted pages, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association had removed a link to executive biographies. Its report also described threats directed at Blues executives amid controversy over a proposed anesthesia coverage policy. That context does not establish that each organization made its website changes for the same reason. Healthcare Dive quoted AHIP President and CEO Michael Tuffin condemning threats against colleagues or anyone else.

What companies said and what they did beyond their websites
UnitedHealth Group’s Dec. 5, 2024 statement said its priorities were “first and foremost, supporting Brian’s family; ensuring the safety of our employees; and working with law enforcement to bring the perpetrator to justice.” That statement describes the company’s stated priorities; it does not by itself explain every website change reported at other companies.
The Associated Press reported that UnitedHealth removed executive photographs hours after the shooting and later removed names and biographies. It also reported that Medica took down executive biographies as a precaution. Separately, Medica temporarily closed its six locations and increased employee security. Centene announced that its Dec. 12, 2024 Investor Day would be virtual, citing Thompson’s death; STAT noted Centene had not specifically said security was the reason for the format change. The AP report distinguishes these measures from website edits.

Why the changes drew attention
Executive names and biographies are ordinary public-facing corporate information, while removing photos, changing links, or limiting access can be a precaution when a company is concerned about employee safety. The contemporaneous reports placed the changes after Thompson’s killing and documented some companies’ security steps, but they do not establish a shared policy or a uniform motive across the sector. Nor do the reports identify an authoritative security standard requiring insurers to publish or remove leadership information.
The AP report offered broader context on corporate executive protection: Meta spent $24.4 million in 2023 on guards, alarms, and other measures for Mark Zuckerberg and its former chief operating officer. AP also reported a median personal-security payment of about $98,000 among Fortune 500 companies that reported such spending to protect CEOs and other top executives; that median had doubled over three years. Just over one quarter of Fortune 500 companies reported spending money on such protection. These figures concern the reporting companies and executives described by AP, not a typical insurer’s budget or a comprehensive measure of industry practice.

What is known now—and what the reports do not establish
The cited website observations are from December 2024. They do not show whether the affected companies later restored, changed, or further restricted those pages, so they should not be treated as a current audit of insurer websites.
UnitedHealth Group’s 2025 proxy statement later identified Andrew Witty as CEO and Stephen Hemsley as board chair and said its annual shareholder meeting on June 2, 2025, would be virtual. That filing provides a dated corporate reference for leadership roles; it does not establish whether website biographies or photographs had returned. The 2025 proxy statement is distinct from a current website check.
