India has a vast bamboo resource, but having bamboo is not the same as turning it into reliable income. A 2025 IndiaSpend article republished by Scroll.in describes India as holding 4% of the global bamboo market, compared with China’s 65%. Those figures are the article’s comparison, not a current, independently verified official market-share series; the available sources do not establish a consistent measure or explain the gap through one cause.
Reporting from Tripura and Assam points instead to connected hurdles: suitable planting material, secure land access, dependable industrial demand, processing capacity, transport costs and the margins available to growers and artisans. These examples help explain how a large natural resource can deliver limited returns, but they are not a representative survey of every bamboo producer in India.
What the India–China comparison does—and does not—show
IndiaSpend’s 2025 article reports that India has 13.96 million hectares of bamboo area, 136 species and annual production of 3.23 million tonnes. A Government of India press note from 2025 also gives the area and species counts, specifying 125 indigenous and 11 exotic species. The article reports China’s bamboo forest area as 6.73 million hectares and assigns India 4% and China 65% of the global bamboo market.
These numbers describe different things: area, species diversity, annual output and market share are not interchangeable measures. The market-share percentages are attributable to the IndiaSpend article; the available official sources do not independently confirm them as a current series or define a consistent market-share calculation. They should not be read as a direct comparison of productivity, exports, or the performance of every producer in either country.

Why a large resource does not automatically create a strong market
Industrial buyers need suitable and dependable raw material
Bamboo species and quality matter to commercial use. In Tripura, IndiaSpend reports that some scheme beneficiaries received Tulda or Barak bamboo, while interviewed growers and experts preferred Kanak Kaich for certain commercial uses. Their assessments of quality, yield and demand are local, interview-based observations—not universal rankings of those species. The broader point is that planting volume alone cannot guarantee a fit between what is grown and what buyers or processors need.
Land access and documentation can affect investment
The article describes Indigenous farmers in Tripura facing land-documentation and demarcation obstacles when trying to establish plantations or access schemes. Interviewees said uncertainty over land records could make it difficult to invest or use support, and some raised concerns about eviction. These are reported experiences, not a claim that every farmer faces the same land situation.

Demand and processing determine whether bamboo has a buyer
Farmers and suppliers interviewed in Assam linked the 2017 closure of two paper-industry facilities with reduced demand for bamboo. A resource can be plentiful yet have weak commercial value when nearby buyers disappear or local processing is limited. The reporting does not establish that those closures alone explain India’s overall market position.
Transport can consume the value of the raw material
One unnamed Assam entrepreneur interviewed by the article estimated that transport accounted for 45%–50% of bamboo’s landing cost to industrial areas in the state. That is one interviewee’s estimate for the described context, not a national transport-cost statistic. It illustrates why distance to processors and the cost of moving bulky raw material can shape whether cultivation is profitable.

What the National Bamboo Mission aims to change
The restructured National Bamboo Mission was launched in 2018–19 with an stated goal of developing a complete value chain rather than focusing only on cultivation. The Press Information Bureau’s 2019 description lists aims including expanding bamboo on non-forest land, improving post-harvest handling and market infrastructure, supporting product development and entrepreneurship, rejuvenating the industry, and building skills and capacity. Its stated budget estimate of Rs 150 crore was for 2019–20 and should not be treated as the current allocation.
A 2025 government note says the mission promotes cultivation, processing and marketing across 24 States and Union Territories, with support described for farmers and MSMEs, farmer-producer organisations and skill development. These are programme aims and reported areas of support; the releases do not show that every market, land, quality or transport constraint has been resolved.

Why training alone may not improve artisans’ income
The Tripura reporting describes an artisan who found repetitive instruction and delayed or missing support frustrating, while earning limited margins from basket-making. The article says the mission allocates up to 5% of its funds for artisan training; that figure is reported by the article and is not independently confirmed here against current programme guidelines.
Training can build a skill, but a livelihood also depends on whether artisans can obtain tools and materials, reach buyers, sell at a price that covers their work, and receive promised support on time. The interview illustrates those practical constraints for one artisan; it does not establish that all participants have the same experience.

What would make the comparison more meaningful
A clear assessment of India’s position against China would need comparable, dated measures for market share, production, exports, bamboo-bearing area, product mix and raw-material quality. The available figures do not provide that complete comparison. The field reporting instead shows how weaknesses at several stages—from planting and land access to processing, transport and sales—can constrain returns even where bamboo is abundant.
