Indian IT stocks can rise after a profit miss or fall after a profit increase because the share-price reaction depends on how the results and outlook compare with what investors expected—not on whether one headline number is positive. Revenue growth, margins, cash generation, bookings and management guidance can point in different directions, and the share price may already reflect optimistic or pessimistic expectations before results are announced.
Why a stock can move against the headline result
An earnings release reports what happened in a completed period. The share price also reflects changing expectations about what comes next. Investors therefore assess the quarter against prior company guidance, market expectations and the outlook for future business. A result can be better than last year’s but still disappoint if investors expected stronger growth. Conversely, a company can report a weaker headline figure and see its stock rise if the result is less weak than expected or its forward outlook improves.

That is a framework for interpreting a reaction, not proof of what caused a particular day’s move. An earnings release alone cannot establish why a stock rose or fell: prices reflect expectations and other market information too. Company operating metrics are not share-return statistics, and there is no single rule that predicts the direction or size of an Indian IT stock’s post-results move.

“Good results” depend on the comparison
Year-over-year growth answers whether a measure increased from the same quarter a year earlier. It does not answer whether the company met its own forecast or investors’ expectations. Those are separate comparisons. A careful reading asks: what did the company say to expect, what did it deliver, and how does the next-quarter outlook compare with the business trajectory investors anticipated?

Company guidance is useful, but it is not a substitute for market consensus. A company can meet its own range and still fall short of investors’ expectations—or miss guidance while exceeding them. Unless a reliable consensus estimate is available for the same measure and period, do not claim that a result “beat” or “missed” market expectations based only on the company’s own forecast.
Which figures to check in an IT company’s results
Read the release as a set of connected indicators rather than treating profit as the sole verdict. The measures below answer different questions; none, on its own, establishes how the stock should react.

Keep period, segment and currency aligned
Before comparing companies or quarters, confirm that the periods match and that the figures refer to comparable businesses or segments. A full-company profit number should not be casually compared with a segment revenue measure. If one release gives constant-currency growth and another gives only reported-currency growth, note the difference rather than presenting them as identical measures.

Constant-currency growth helps separate the reported change in revenue from the effect of currency conversion. It does not replace reported revenue: the two figures answer related but distinct questions. When a company supplies both, record both and identify which one is being used in any comparison.
How to read guidance and bookings without overreading them
Compare actual results with the company’s own range
A guidance-versus-actual tracker can show whether the company delivered within a range it previously set. That is informative about execution against company guidance, but it does not tell you what the market expected. Keep those two benchmarks distinct in notes and in any explanation of a price move.
For a fair comparison, capture the original guidance period and measure, its range, the actual result, and any difference in currency basis. If guidance is for constant-currency revenue but the actual is reported in dollars, do not compare the figures as if they were the same basis.

Treat bookings as a forward-looking clue, not booked revenue
Bookings and large-deal announcements can indicate demand or sales activity, but they do not tell you exactly when work will begin, how much revenue will be recognized in a particular quarter, or what margins that work will produce. Use them as context for the outlook, not as a direct substitute for reported revenue or earnings.
Look for the company’s own definition of the booking measure and compare it with prior periods only when the definitions and reporting periods are consistent. If the release provides no amount, definition or comparable history, do not fill in the gap with an assumption.
What Wipro’s Q1 FY27 results show—and do not show
Wipro’s results release dated July 16, 2026, covers the quarter ended June 30, 2026. It offers a useful example of why one headline does not describe the entire quarter. Wipro reported IT-services revenue of $2,614.5 million, up 1.0% year over year in reported dollars and 0.9% in constant currency. Its IT-services operating margin was 16.0%, down 1.2 percentage points year over year. Net income was ₹33.6 billion and EPS was ₹3.20, each up 0.6% year over year. Operating cash flow equaled 98.0% of net income. These are company-reported operating results, not evidence of a particular share-price reaction.

The release also gave September-quarter IT-services revenue guidance of $2,574 million to $2,627 million, corresponding to sequential guidance of negative 1.5% to positive 0.5% in constant currency. That range gives readers a forward-looking measure to evaluate, but it does not establish whether investors found the outlook better or worse than their expectations.
Check the forecast comparison separately
Wipro’s guidance-versus-actual tracker shows Q1 FY27 guided-currency revenue of $2,619.1 million against a guidance range of $2,597 million to $2,651 million; reported-currency revenue was $2,614.5 million. This is an example of comparing an actual with the company’s own range. It is not a measure of market consensus and should not be described as proof that the quarter beat investor expectations.
Taken together, the disclosed figures show modest year-over-year revenue and profit growth, a lower operating margin, cash flow close to net income, and a September-quarter revenue range that includes both a sequential decline and a small increase on a constant-currency basis. An investor may weigh those signals differently. The figures do not establish which one drove Wipro’s share price after the announcement.

Management commentary adds context, not a guaranteed outcome
In the July 16, 2026 release, Wipro CEO and Managing Director Srini Pallia said: “Clients are moving beyond technology modernization to AI-enabled operating models that improve quality, resilience, and productivity.” CFO Aparna Iyer said: “While these investments may create some near-term margin volatility, it sets a strong foundation for future growth.” These comments explain management’s framing of opportunity and investment. They do not quantify future revenue or margins, and they do not guarantee that the expected benefits will arrive on a particular timeline.

Use this sequence to separate reported facts from interpretation. It will not predict the next move, but it can make an explanation more disciplined.
- Identify the event and period. Confirm the announcement date, quarter ended, fiscal year and business segment. Avoid mixing a fiscal-quarter result with a different period’s guidance.
- Record the company’s prior guidance. Note the measure, range, currency basis and period. Compare the actual with that range only when the measures are comparable.
- Check the revenue picture. Note reported growth and constant-currency growth separately where both are disclosed. Identify whether each figure is year over year or sequential.
- Assess profitability and cash together. Review operating margin and its direction, then net income, EPS and operating cash flow. Do not infer that higher revenue necessarily means better profitability or cash generation.
- Review bookings with timing in mind. Record disclosed total or large-deal measures, but do not count bookings as current-period recognized revenue.
- Read the next-period outlook. Capture the exact range and its comparison basis. Ask whether it changes the forward picture, while keeping your own assessment separate from claims about market consensus.
- Describe the price move cautiously. State what the shares did only if you have reliable price data for the relevant window. Then distinguish the observed move from a possible explanation; the release alone cannot prove causation.
Why a confident explanation may not be possible
To say that an earnings release caused a stock’s move requires more than lining up a positive or negative metric with a price change. Investors may have anticipated the result, focused on a different measure, or responded to other market information around the same time. Without comparable expectations data and a defined event window, an explanation should be framed as a possibility rather than a proven cause.
That distinction matters especially when comparing companies. A meaningful comparison would align reporting periods and assess constant-currency and reported growth, operating-margin level and direction, profit and EPS, cash conversion, disclosed bookings, and guidance against later actuals. It would also require comparable valuation and market-expectation data to make strong claims about price reactions. The company disclosures referenced here do not provide a cross-company dataset of consensus estimates, valuations or event-window returns, so they cannot support a ranking of Indian IT companies by post-results performance or a sector-wide “usual” reaction.
For primary operating disclosures, use the companies’ investor-relations materials: Wipro’s Q1 FY27 release and guidance tracker, Infosys’s FY26 Q4 results materials, and HCLTech’s quarter-results index. These are sources for company results and outlook, not a substitute for market-price data or a controlled study of what caused a share-price move.
