Hyundai’s 2024 “close to $1 billion” Motional deal combined two different transactions: $475 million in new funding for Motional and a planned $448 million purchase of Aptiv’s existing 11% stake. Together, the reported amounts equal $923 million, but the full sum was not new operating capital for Motional. Hyundai later invested about $440 million more, while Motional shifted its strategy and set a driverless Las Vegas service target for the end of 2026.
What did Hyundai’s “close to $1 billion” deal include?
The headline refers to two 2024 amounts, not one payment into Motional. Hyundai invested $475 million directly in Motional on May 2, 2024. TechCrunch separately reported that Hyundai planned to pay $448 million to buy Aptiv’s 11% common-equity interest in the company. Adding those reported figures gives approximately $923 million, a calculation that explains the shorthand but is not a separately reported investment total. Aptiv’s filing and TechCrunch’s 2024 report describe the transactions.
| 2024 component | Amount | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Direct Hyundai investment in Motional | $475 million | New funding provided to Motional, according to Motional and Aptiv. |
| Planned purchase of Aptiv’s 11% interest | $448 million | Payment for existing shares, as reported by TechCrunch—not new capital paid into Motional. |
| Combined shorthand | Approximately $923 million | Arithmetic sum of the two reported amounts, not a separately reported investment figure. |
The distinction matters: buying shares from an existing owner changes who owns the company, while a direct investment supplies funds to the business.
How much more did Hyundai invest, and what happened to Aptiv’s stake?
Aptiv’s SEC filing says the 2024 transactions reduced its common-equity interest in Motional from 50% to approximately 15%. It also reports that Hyundai invested approximately $440 million in Motional on May 30, 2025, reducing Aptiv’s interest from approximately 15% to approximately 13%. The filing says the 2024 restructuring eliminated Aptiv’s future funding obligations. Aptiv’s first-quarter 2026 filing records these ownership and funding details.

These figures establish continued Hyundai funding and a smaller Aptiv stake; they do not establish that Hyundai owns all of Motional. The cited filings do not provide a complete current ownership breakdown.
Why is Hyundai funding Motional?
Motional is a self-driving technology company formed in 2020 as a joint venture between Aptiv and Hyundai Motor Group. Aptiv says the venture was established to design, develop, and commercialize autonomous-driving technology. The funding supports a long-horizon technology effort, but Aptiv has described autonomous-vehicle commercialization timing as extended and uncertain, with additional funding requirements for Motional. Neither that disclosure nor the disclosed investments establishes Motional’s cash runway, insolvency, or eventual commercial success. Aptiv’s filing discusses those uncertainties.

How has Motional changed its plans?
May 2024: prioritize core technology over near-term deployment
In May 2024, Motional said it would focus resources on developing and generalizing its core driverless technology, de-emphasize near-term commercial deployments, and reduce staff. The company described large-scale driverless deployment as a future goal, not an immediate one. At the time, Motional said it had provided more than 100,000 autonomous rides in Las Vegas and thousands of autonomous food deliveries in Los Angeles; those are company-reported cumulative totals, not independently audited figures in the statement. Motional’s May 7, 2024 statement provides its rationale and operating figures.
January 2026: an AI-first approach and a Las Vegas target
In January 2026, Motional told TechCrunch it had adopted an AI-first approach and was targeting a commercial driverless service in Las Vegas by the end of 2026. The stated path was from a service with a human safety operator to a driverless service. Motional president and CEO Laura Major told TechCrunch, “And so we made the very hard decision to pause our commercial activities, to slow down in the near term so that we could speed up.” This is a company-stated target, not confirmation that a launch has occurred or a guarantee that it will happen by that date. TechCrunch’s January 2026 report describes the plan.

What does Hyundai’s NVIDIA collaboration add?
In March 2026, Hyundai said its group would advance discussions with NVIDIA through Motional to support Level 4 robotaxi capabilities. Hyundai described the broader effort as part of a group-wide autonomous-driving collaboration. The announcement says cooperation terms and timing remained subject to ongoing discussions and a future definitive agreement; it does not establish finalized terms or a completed technology deployment. Hyundai’s March 16, 2026 announcement sets out that qualification.
