Hyundai has dropped its planned Australian launch of the IONIQ 3, which had been expected in the first half of 2027. The company told The Driven that sourcing the car from Turkey and competing at a price Australian small-EV buyers would accept made the business case too difficult. Lower-priced electric cars are part of the market context, but the available reporting does not show that Chinese competitors alone caused the decision.
Why did Hyundai cancel the Australian launch?
The Driven reported on 2 October 2026 that Hyundai had scrapped the planned launch and removed an Australian registration page. A Hyundai spokesperson, whose name was not published, said the company needed to source the car from Turkey and that import costs would make it difficult to compete in a price-sensitive segment.
“The business case is just too difficult given we need to source Ioniq 3 from Turkey.”
The spokesperson added: “The cost of importation is high and the car will be fighting in a very price-sensitive segment. The numbers just don’t work for us given the competition.” These comments support a cost-and-pricing explanation. They do not quantify the respective effects of freight, exchange rates, tariffs, dealer margins, expected sales volumes or competition.

So, while Chinese EVs help explain the competitive pressure, it would go beyond the reporting to say a particular rival—or Chinese brands alone—forced Hyundai to cancel.
What was the IONIQ 3 supposed to be?
Hyundai introduced the IONIQ 3 on 20 April 2026 as a compact electric hatchback designed around European everyday use. The company calls its design an “Aero Hatch” and says it uses the E-GMP platform with 400-volt architecture. These are manufacturer-announced details; they do not confirm Australian-market equipment or approval.

The range figures are projections from Hyundai, not independently tested results or Australian-market estimates. Real-world range varies with factors such as driving conditions, temperature, speed and vehicle configuration. Hyundai Motor Europe President and CEO Xavier Martinet described the car as bringing IONIQ design and features to more European customers; that is the manufacturer’s positioning, not an independent assessment.
How price competition puts pressure on a small EV
Contemporary Australian coverage described a crowded, price-sensitive small-EV market. The Driven reported October 2026 offers of $19,990 drive-away for the BYD Atto 1 Essential and $28,888 drive-away for the BYD Dolphin. It also reported Geely EX2 pricing from $26,490 before on-road costs and GAC Aion UT pricing around $31,990 drive-away. Separately, CarExpert listed the GAC Aion UT from $31,990 drive-away, Leapmotor B05 from $35,990 drive-away and MG 4 EV Urban from $29,990 drive-away.

Those are dated reported prices, not lasting list prices. Offers can change, and drive-away figures are not directly comparable with prices before on-road costs or with different trims. Hyundai did not announce an Australian IONIQ 3 price, so there is no confirmed local price against which to compare them. The reports show the kind of price pressure Hyundai cited, but do not establish a precise cost breakdown or a single cause for the decision.
What can Australian buyers consider instead?
The GAC Aion UT, Leapmotor B05 and MG 4 EV Urban were identified in October 2026 coverage as relevant small-EV rivals. The BYD Atto 1, BYD Dolphin and Geely EX2 also appeared in reported price comparisons. Check current local listings and offers before making a budget: the prices above are time-sensitive, and the vehicles may differ in body style, size, equipment and trim.

- Compare the full purchase cost: distinguish drive-away offers from prices before on-road costs, and compare equivalent trims.
- Check range on the same basis: Hyundai’s announced IONIQ 3 ranges are projected WLTP figures. Do not treat them as directly equivalent to competitor figures using a different test cycle or battery version.
- Match the car to how you use it: body style, cabin and cargo space can matter as much as headline range or price.
- Confirm ownership details: check delivery timing, warranty and service arrangements with the seller for the specific vehicle and location.
Has Hyundai named a replacement?
No replacement is confirmed in the cited coverage. CarExpert reported that Hyundai Australia might fill the IONIQ 3’s place with another EV, but the model was unclear. Treat that as a possibility, not an announced plan.
