Two entries for one purchase do not always mean you were billed twice. A merchant may have authorized your card once when you placed the order and again when the payment came due, which leaves two pending entries even though only one amount ultimately bills. If both entries have posted as completed charges for the same purchase, treat it as a possible duplicate billing error. Compare the transaction details, contact the seller, and if the problem is not promptly corrected, dispute the duplicate with your card issuer.
Start by checking whether each entry is pending or posted
The most important distinction is status, because it determines whether money has actually been collected.
- Pending (authorization): A merchant has asked the card network to approve and hold funds. A pending entry is not a finished charge, and the amount that finally bills can differ from what the pending list shows.
- Posted: The transaction has been processed and appears as a completed charge, usually on your statement or in the posted-transactions section of your account.
Only a posted duplicate points to a probable billing error. Two pending entries alone do not establish that the account will be billed twice.
Why two entries can appear
There are three common explanations. They look similar on a banking app but call for different responses.

Two authorizations for one purchase
Many merchants authorize a card at order placement and then again when the payment becomes due, particularly when the final amount is not known at checkout. American Express UK’s customer-service guidance explains the result directly:
“If a Pending Transaction appears on your Card Account twice, it does not necessarily mean your Account will be billed twice.” — American Express UK, customer-service FAQ

In this case, the second entry is usually a temporary hold rather than a second bill. Keep watching the account until the statement or posted list shows what was actually charged.
Duplicate processing by the merchant
A true duplicate can be created in the payment process. Visa’s merchant guidance, dated June 2024, lists these common causes:

- A transaction entered into the terminal or payment system twice.
- The same capture batch submitted more than once.
- Both the merchant copy and the acquirer copy of a receipt submitted for processing.
- Two transaction receipts created for one purchase.
The same guidance says that when a merchant confirms one transaction was settled more than once, it should accept the duplicate-processing dispute. It also allows a merchant to show that two entries were genuinely separate purchases, or that a credit or reversal has already been issued.
Separate purchases or other billing events
Two similar entries can also be legitimate. Examples include two separate orders placed a few minutes apart, a subscription renewal close to a one-time purchase, or an amount that changed between authorization and billing. Visa’s guidance recognizes that merchant records may show the entries were separate purchases, so a matching merchant name and amount are not enough on their own to call something a duplicate. The sources available for this article do not establish how any particular merchant handles split shipments, subscriptions, or amount changes. Check your order confirmations and the merchant’s terms rather than assuming either explanation.

What to do if both entries have posted
- Record the details. In your card app or online account, note each entry’s status, date, amount, merchant descriptor, and transaction identifier if one is shown.
- Compare against your records. Check receipts, order confirmations, subscription history, and any refund or reversal already issued. If the two entries match a single order, you have a stronger case for a duplicate.
- Contact the merchant first. Ask it to confirm whether you made one purchase or two. If it processed one purchase twice, ask for the duplicate to be reversed or refunded. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises contacting the seller quickly, noting that “Sometimes a company may bill you twice for the same thing — or bill you for something you either returned or never got.”
- Escalate to your card issuer if it is not corrected promptly. Use the number on the back of your card or the dispute feature in your account. Visa directs consumers with a disputed Visa charge to their issuing bank. Issuer procedures vary, so ask what documents they need and how long they take to respond.
- Use the formal billing-error route where it applies. In the United States, the FTC describes a billing-error process for credit cards under the Fair Credit Billing Act (FCBA). Follow the instructions printed on your statement or provided by the issuer, watch for any written-notice deadline, and keep copies of everything you send.
Unfamiliar charges are a different problem
If you do not recognize either entry, do not treat it as a duplicate. An unfamiliar charge should be reported to your issuer as a possibly unauthorized transaction. The FTC notes that unauthorized charges can signal identity theft and directs people to IdentityTheft.gov for a recovery plan. Report the charge promptly rather than waiting for the merchant to respond.
Where these rules stop
- The FTC’s billing-error process described above is for U.S. credit cards and revolving credit accounts. It does not cover personal loans or closed-end loans.
- Debit cards, prepaid cards, and accounts outside the United States may follow different rules. Check the protections and procedures published by your own issuer and regulator before relying on any of these steps.
- No article can tell from a description alone whether your entries are pending authorizations, a duplicate settlement, separate purchases, or unauthorized activity. Your transaction status, payment type, issuer, merchant records, and location decide which path applies.
