The widely reported $287 million figure was the original August 2024 jury verdict in lawsuits over a fatal crash involving a 2019 Harley-Davidson three-wheeled motorcycle. It was not a new 2026 order, and a New York trial court later conditionally reduced or vacated parts of the damages. The final judgment and appeal outcome are not established by the available court decision and reporting.
Why did the jury award $287 million?
The lawsuits followed a June 6, 2020 crash in Pennsylvania. Harold Morris and Pamela SinClair were riding a 2019 Harley-Davidson trike when it crashed. SinClair died, and Morris suffered severe injuries.
Morris and SinClair’s estate alleged that a problem involving the trike’s traction-control system caused or contributed to the crash. Harley-Davidson disputed that the motorcycle was defective and argued that Morris had not established defect or causation. The company also disputed responsibility for the repair shop’s actions. The jury found for the plaintiffs and returned a verdict reported at about $287 million.
Reporting describes an earlier 2019 Florida crash involving the same motorcycle and a later recall concerning the trike’s traction-control software. Morris’s side said he had the motorcycle serviced after the Florida crash and relied on assurances that it was safe. Harley-Davidson disputed a connection between that earlier crash and the recall. The available accounts do not establish that the earlier incident itself caused the Pennsylvania crash.

What made up the reported verdict?
Contemporaneous reporting identified $120 million in punitive damages for Morris and another $120 million for SinClair’s estate. Those two awards account for $240 million of the approximately $287 million total; other damages made up the balance. Insurance Journal reported the punitive-damages figures on August 13, 2024 (Insurance Journal’s verdict report).
Punitive damages are distinct from compensation for losses such as injuries or medical expenses. The jury’s reported total, however, should not be read as the final amount Harley-Davidson was ultimately required to pay: a later court ruling changed parts of the damages award.

How did the court change the award?
In December 2024, the New York trial court granted Harley-Davidson’s post-trial motion in part. Its amended decision conditionally reduced two components of Morris’s damages and vacated one award to SinClair’s estate. The decision ordered a new trial on certain damages unless the plaintiffs accepted specified reductions.
| Damages component | Original award | December 2024 decision |
|---|---|---|
| Morris’s future pain and suffering | $15 million | Conditionally reduced to $3 million |
| Morris’s future medical expenses | $15 million | Conditionally reduced to $1 million |
| SinClair estate’s conscious pain and suffering | $2.5 million | Award vacated |
The court explained that damages for personal injuries are primarily for the jury to determine, but an award may be set aside if it “deviates materially from what would be reasonable compensation,” citing New York CPLR 5501(c). The court’s amended December 2024 decision sets out the conditional reductions and vacatur.

Is Harley-Davidson required to pay $287 million now?
The available record does not establish the final entered judgment or the current appeal status. The court’s reductions were conditional, and the decision called for a new trial on certain damages unless the plaintiffs stipulated to the specified changes. The information available here does not establish whether they did so, whether a damages retrial occurred, or how any appeal was resolved.
Harley-Davidson’s trial attorney said in August 2024 that the company disagreed with the verdict and planned to appeal, as reported by The Buffalo News. That statement described an intention at the time; it does not establish that an appeal was filed or its outcome.

What the case does—and does not—say about the motorcycle
The verdict concerned claims arising from this particular crash and motorcycle. Plaintiffs alleged a traction-control problem; Harley-Davidson contested defect, causation, and responsibility. The case does not, by itself, establish that every Harley-Davidson trike or every 2019 Tri Glide Ultra is unsafe.
