Why does GTA 6 have such a long development cycle?
In an interview reported by Game Informer on March 31, 2025, Zelnick gave two main reasons: Take-Two intentionally spaces out releases from its non-sports franchises, and a large, robust game takes a long time to make. He said Rockstar aims for a high standard and that the success of GTA V across three console generations has raised expectations for GTA VI.

Take-Two’s release cadence is a business choice, not a claim that every game requires the same amount of development time. Zelnick said the company annualizes its sports titles, while allowing non-sports properties to rest between releases. He argued that the gap can help build anticipation as well as give developers time to create a substantial game.
Separately, in remarks on Take-Two’s fiscal 2025 fourth-quarter earnings call, Zelnick said GTA VI “began development in earnest in 2020 following the massive success of Red Dead Redemption 2.” That is the company’s description of the development start; it does not establish a complete or independently audited measure of the game’s total development duration. The same call included no independently verified development-duration figure or budget.

Why does Take-Two say anticipation is unusually high?
Zelnick said the game’s anticipation “may be the greatest anticipation I’ve ever seen for an entertainment property.” He described Take-Two’s marketing approach as releasing materials relatively close to launch rather than setting out a schedule years in advance, with the aim of sustaining excitement while managing expectations. He also acknowledged that the company does not always get that balance exactly right.
Those are the CEO’s characterization and explanation of the company’s strategy—not an independent comparison showing GTA VI ranks above every other entertainment release. Take-Two has cited trailer-view figures as evidence of public interest, but those figures are company-reported engagement totals rather than a measurement of anticipation across the entertainment industry.

The release plan changed after Zelnick’s March 2025 interview, which described the game as planned for that year. On May 2, 2025, Take-Two announced that Rockstar had moved the release from Fall 2025 to May 26, 2026. Zelnick said the company supported giving Rockstar additional time and recognized the “vast and deep global anticipation.”

The latest cited publisher announcement, dated June 24, 2026, gives November 19, 2026, as the planned launch date for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Release dates are plans and can change. The announcement also says the physical retail box contains a download code, not a game disc.
