Gold slipped on October 5, 2026, as the US dollar strengthened, but softer US jobs data helped limit the decline by easing expectations for a Federal Reserve rate hike. The move was a dated market snapshot, not a current quote: later reports showed gold recovering as the dollar weakened and Treasury yields paused.
What happened to gold on October 5?
Reuters reported spot gold down 0.3% at $4,131.61 per ounce by 0422 GMT on October 5, 2026. In the same report, the US Dollar Index was up 0.6%. Those figures describe that observation time; they should not be read as live prices or as US gold-futures prices. Reuters report via MarketScreener.
A firmer dollar can weigh on dollar-priced gold because it makes the metal more expensive for buyers whose currencies are not the dollar. That can reduce their purchasing power or demand. It is a pressure, not a rule that determines gold’s price by itself.
Why did softer jobs data cushion the decline?
September job growth came in weaker than expected, and revisions lowered payroll counts for the prior two months. Reuters said the data reduced expectations for an October Federal Reserve rate hike, helping limit pressure on gold. This was the market explanation reported at the time, not proof that the jobs data alone caused the price move. Reuters report via MarketScreener.

Gold does not pay interest. When investors expect higher interest rates or see yields rise, interest-bearing assets may become more attractive relative to bullion. Conversely, lower expectations for near-term rate increases can ease that opportunity-cost pressure. The relationship is not automatic: currencies, yields, investor demand and other risks can all move at once.
How the market picture changed over the next two days
The direction shifted after the October 5 snapshot. Reuters reported distinct prices at different observation times, so these figures should not be treated as one simultaneous market reading.

For a personal-finance reader following gold, the useful question is not simply whether the dollar is rising or falling. Consider the combination of factors and the time of the observation:

- Dollar direction and size: A stronger dollar can make dollar-denominated gold more costly in other currencies.
- Treasury yields: Rising yields may increase the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion. Distinguish nominal yields from real yields when a report specifies them.
- Rate expectations: Market-implied probabilities are estimates, not Federal Reserve commitments. Check when they were recorded.
- Safe-haven demand: Geopolitical and sovereign-bond concerns can support gold even when currency or yield pressures point the other way.
These forces can offset one another. The reports do not establish a validated price forecast or a recommended trade. Analysts quoted by Reuters also emphasized uncertainty: Kyle Rodda of Capital.com said a significant change in US rate expectations could be a catalyst, while Ole Hansen of Saxo Bank pointed to dollar strength and real yields as pressures on investor appetite. Those are attributed market views, not guarantees. Reuters via Kitco Reuters via Business Recorder.
