Gary Neville acquired Peter Lim’s stake in Salford City in August 2024 to make way for a new strategic partner, according to the club’s announcement. Salford was exploring additional partnerships, and BBC reporting said the club was seeking outside investment amid small crowds. The sources do not disclose the purchase price or establish any private motive beyond that public rationale.
What Neville’s 2024 buyout was meant to do
Salford City announced on 2 August 2024 that Neville had acquired Lim’s interest. The club described the deal as the conclusion of Lim’s ten-year tenure and said it would “pave the way for a new strategic partner.” The Class of ’92’s joint statement added: “Peter has been integral in helping to create a legacy at Salford City that we are now determined to build on.” That quote was issued jointly, not by Neville alone. BBC Sport’s report on the announcement records the club’s explanation.
The public explanation points to a strategic and financial objective: create a route for another partner to join the club. In April 2024, chief executive Nicky Butt said Salford continued to explore working with additional strategic partners. BBC reporting also described the club as looking for outside investment while drawing small crowds. Those circumstances help explain why a partner might matter, but they are reporting context—not a separate official explanation of Neville’s personal reasons. BBC Sport’s April 2024 coverage reports the partnership search and investment context.
How Lim’s stake changed between 2014 and 2024
The percentages refer to different points in Salford’s ownership history. Lim held 50% when the Class of ’92 took control in 2014. By the 2024 transaction, local reporting described his stake as 40%, after David Beckham had made an earlier investment. It would therefore be inaccurate to say Neville bought Lim’s original 50% stake in 2024. BBC Sport’s account of the club’s history gives the 2014 figure; Salford Now’s contemporaneous report describes Lim’s 2024 interest as 40%.

The club’s sporting rise provides context for the partnership search. After the 2014 takeover, Salford won four promotions in five seasons and reached the English Football League in 2019, according to BBC Sport. That achievement explains the club’s changing scale, but does not by itself establish the financial terms or motive behind the 2024 share transfer. BBC Sport’s report provides this historical context.
The 2024 buyout and 2025 takeover were separate deals
Neville’s acquisition of Lim’s interest in August 2024 was not the same transaction as the ownership change announced in May 2025. In 2024, the stated purpose was to open a path to a strategic partner. In May 2025, a new consortium led by David Beckham and Neville completed a takeover and committed to significant investment in the club, team and facilities. Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Phil Neville ceased to be shareholders, while retaining roles at the club. BBC Sport’s report on the 2025 takeover describes the new group and the changes.

In describing the later group’s goals, Neville cited sustainability, revenue growth, better facilities and keeping support accessible to fans. In August 2025, AIG announced a minority equity investment and a long-term commercial partnership, citing infrastructure improvements, digital fan engagement and community programming. These later developments show the kind of investment activity that followed, but they should not be treated as evidence of the 2024 deal’s undisclosed terms. BBC Sport’s takeover report covers the group’s stated aims; AIG’s announcement describes its investment and partnership.

The reviewed public announcements and reporting do not disclose what Neville paid for Lim’s stake, a valuation for Salford at the time, or detailed transaction terms. Companies House provides a filing-history index, but that index alone does not establish the 2024 price or a complete current ownership breakdown. Without a disclosed figure, any claimed purchase price or valuation would be speculation. Salford City Football Club’s Companies House filing history is an index of filings, not a published account of those deal terms.
