Why Game Industry Layoffs Passed 10,500 by Mid-June 2024

By mid-June 2024, announced video game industry layoffs had passed 10,800, exceeding the Game Industry Layoff Tracker’s estimate of 10,500 for all of 2023. That was a dated running estimate—not a finalized annual count or an audited tally of unique workers. The surge reflected several pressures converging: pandemic-era growth expectations, rising development costs, slower growth in some markets, and companies cutting projects and teams whose expected returns no longer justified their budgets.

What the 10,800 figure does—and does not—mean

Dean Takahashi reported in GamesBeat on June 14, 2024, with the article marked updated June 18, 2025, that announced cuts had topped 10,800 by mid-June. The figure came from the Game Industry Layoff Tracker, following announcements of 150 cuts at Sumo Group and 100 at Timbre Games. The same tracker figures cited in the article put 2023 at 10,500 and 2022 at 8,500. The comparison is therefore roughly five and a half months of 2024 against complete calendar years, not a comparison of final annual totals. GamesBeat’s report does not establish that the tracker is complete, independently audited, or counting unique people verified across announcements.

Layoff numbers can describe different things. A tracker may count announced job cuts; a survey may count respondents who say they experienced a layoff; a company analysis may cover only a selected set of employers. Those measures answer different questions and should not be added together or treated as competing totals.

Why studios and publishers cut jobs

The explanation reported by Takahashi, drawing on Matthew Ball, is structural rather than a single-trigger story. Several conditions changed at once: consumer behavior and spending shifted after the pandemic, the cost and risk of making games increased, and companies reassessed forecasts and investment made during a period of unusually strong growth.

Growth expectations met a less favorable market

During the pandemic, more time at home supported strong engagement with games. When restrictions eased, some people spent less time at home, and growth did not necessarily continue at the pace companies had anticipated. Ball’s diagnosis, as summarized by Takahashi, also points to console-market saturation and weaker or exhausted growth drivers from the prior five to ten years. The issue is not that people stopped playing games; it is that growth, spending patterns, and expected returns could fall short of plans built around sustained expansion.

Ball attributed two market comparisons to his analysis: US consumer spending was down 14% in real terms since 2021, and international sales were down 13% since 2020. Takahashi’s account does not provide the underlying calculations or dataset, so these should be understood as Ball’s figures, not as independently established measures of the entire global games market.

Games became more expensive and riskier to make

Large projects require substantial investment in staff, technology, marketing, and time. As budgets escalated and competition for players’ attention intensified, a game that missed its commercial targets could leave a publisher with fewer reasons to keep funding the team or the project. Higher costs and interest rates added pressure to investment decisions; slower growth made ambitious forecasts harder to defend.

This creates a difficult portfolio calculation: companies may cancel or scale back a game, close or shrink a studio, or reduce staff across a business. Any one of those decisions can be associated with layoffs, but examples of canceled or underperforming games do not by themselves prove that a particular project caused a particular job cut.

Companies reversed pandemic-era expansion and forecasts

Some employers expanded hiring and spending on the expectation that pandemic-era demand would persist. When forecasts disappointed, layoffs became one way to reduce costs alongside project cancellations and studio closures. Ball described the industry’s cuts as spanning canceled and scaled-back games, studios that were shut down or shrunk, and startups forced to close after private funding for gaming studios fell 28% from pre-pandemic levels—even as overall venture-capital investment rose 15%. Those funding comparisons are also figures quoted from Ball’s analysis by Takahashi.

His broader summary was: “The answer is diverse and structural, including changing business models, evolving user behaviors and preferences, labor economics and microeconomics, disappointing forecasts (and only-recently abandoned rationales for the related shortfalls), competitive and budgetary escalation, console saturation, and an end to the growth-drivers of the last five and ten years.” Takahashi reproduced this statement from Ball; it is not a direct transcript or a separately reviewed original analysis.

How later figures measure the impact differently

Subsequent figures illustrate why scope and method matter. GDC’s 2025 survey asked more than 3,000 developers and industry professionals about their experiences; its official announcement reported a ±2% margin of error. In coverage of the survey, 11% said they had been laid off in the preceding year, while 41% said they had been impacted by layoffs, up from 35% in the prior report. These are respondents’ reports, not counts of all workers laid off across the industry. GDC’s 2025 survey announcement

A separate S&P Global Market Intelligence analysis, reported in 2025, found 1,554 positions cut—2% of the combined workforce—among the companies included in its analysis. That selected-company scope is narrower than a broad layoff tracker, so the result does not directly disprove the tracker’s estimate. GamesIndustry.biz’s report on the S&P analysis
