French high-school students are protesting a mix of everyday school problems and anxiety about what comes next: missing teachers, overcrowded or run-down buildings, difficult schedules and access to higher education. The movement began in Paris-area high schools in September 2026 and spread across France. Police confrontations and the government’s response have since become part of the dispute.
How the protests began and spread
High-school students in the Paris region began boycotting classes and blocking schools in mid-to-late September 2026. The actions spread through social media and developed without a new reform serving as their immediate trigger, according to Le Monde’s reporting. Demonstrations later reached cities across France, with some university students, teachers, unions and parents taking part.
The movement is not a single centrally directed campaign with one agreed platform. Students’ priorities differ from school to school, and reporting describes participants with varied motives. On October 6, demonstrations took place nationwide.
What students say is wrong with their schools
Students have pointed to practical conditions that affect their school days, including absent teachers who are not replaced, too few staff, crowded classes, deteriorating buildings, excessive heat and missing basic equipment. Some also object to demanding or poorly balanced timetables. Education inspectors quoted by Le Monde said schedules could be “very full” and “not always well balanced,” making life outside school harder, particularly for students dependent on school transport.

These complaints sit within longer-running capacity and staffing pressures. Le Monde reported on October 5 that public secondary education had fewer teachers than in 2008 despite serving 250,000 more students; uncovered long-term teacher absences doubled from 2018 to 2024; and more than a third of schools were at or over capacity. Le Monde attributed some of these figures to Ministry of Education data.
Students’ anger is not limited to classroom resources. Parcoursup, the platform used to apply for higher education, is another source of stress and uncertainty for some. Le Monde cited a 2024 Institut Montaigne study in which 77% of young people said Parcoursup stressed them and 21% wanted it abolished. Those figures describe responses in that study; they do not mean every protester opposes the platform.

How large were the October 6 demonstrations?
The French Interior Ministry estimated that 266,000 people demonstrated nationwide on October 6, including 56,000 in Paris, according to the Associated Press. AP also reported that nearly 500 people were detained that day. The attendance figures are the ministry’s estimates, relayed by AP, rather than an independently established count.
Why the police response has become another grievance
Reports describe tear gas, arrests and other crowd-control measures, as well as injuries involving students, school staff and police officers. Officials have said officers intervened amid violence and defended their response. Students, parents, teachers and opposition figures have criticized the use of force against minors. Le Monde quoted Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez on October 6 saying, “There are no orders to show restraint.”

What the government has done—and what remains unsettled
The government has met with student organizations and parent groups, issued a roadmap, reversed an announced fee for non-scholarship students in certain postsecondary programs, and created an online portal where students can describe their school conditions. On October 7, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu called for a “political response,” saying students’ “discontent” and “anxiety” were “real” and should be heard “with great humility.” Le Monde reported that he announced no new measures during parliamentary questions that day.

The protests are unfolding amid public-sector labor action, debate over France’s 2027 budget, pressure on public spending and political uncertainty. That context helps explain why school grievances have drawn wider attention, but it should not be mistaken for the students’ specific complaints.

Opposition politicians have supported the protests, while government figures have accused La France Insoumise of exploiting or steering them. Those are political claims, not evidence that the party organized or controls the movement. Reporting from schools instead describes a varied set of participants, including students focused on better conditions and some people seeking confrontation. SE-UNSA teachers’ union general secretary Elisabeth Allain-Moreno told Le Monde, “After 10 years of Emmanuel Macron’s education policies, it was to be expected that high school students would be angry.”
