The surge came as disruption to Black Sea trade pushed importers toward western European supplies. This was a five-month result for one export silo—not a record for a full season or for all French grain exports.
What the 10-year high measured
The figure covered grain shipped by Nord Cereales, which operated the Dunkirk export silo, during the first five months of the 2022/23 season. Reuters described the period total as more than 1.2 million tonnes and its highest July-to-November volume in over ten years. Dunkirk’s exports were mainly wheat, and the facility was described as France’s third-largest grain export silo. Reuters-attributed reporting republished by ESM Magazine gives the period comparison and port context.
The time window matters: a five-month shipment total cannot be compared directly with a full-season total, a forecast, or sales of French wheat that may move through multiple ports.
Why shipments accelerated
Reuters linked the brisk start to the 2022/23 season with disruption to Black Sea trade after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Importers turned more toward western European supplies, supporting French exports. This was the explanation reported at the time, not a complete accounting of every factor affecting shipments.

Traders separately estimated that France had sold 400,000 to 700,000 tonnes of wheat to China in the weeks before the report. That was a reported estimate of French sales—not a Dunkirk shipment total. A vessel was also expected to call at Dunkirk on December 9, 2022, to load 25,000 tonnes of wheat for China after taking on 40,000 tonnes at Rouen, according to Refinitiv port data cited by Reuters. The report described an expected call, not confirmation that the cargo was loaded.

Reuters attributed the 2021/22 decline to a disappointing harvest, the COVID-19 pandemic, and renovation work at the facility. The earlier China figures are destination-specific totals; they should not be confused with all-destination season volumes.

Where the projected December shipments were headed
For the projected 1.44 million tonnes through December 2022, the spokesperson listed Egypt, China, and Pakistan as the leading destinations:

These destination figures were part of a December year-end projection reported by Reuters, rather than a later audited season total. France’s main grain export hubs named in the report were Rouen, La Pallice, and Dunkirk, so national sales figures and port-specific shipments are not interchangeable.

What the report does—and does not—establish
The report documents an unusually strong first five months at Nord Cereales’ Dunkirk silo in late 2022 and offers Black Sea disruption as the market explanation. It does not establish that Dunkirk holds a current export record, that all French grain exports reached a record, or that the projected December figure was ultimately achieved. Current totals and destination rankings require newer operator or port data.
