Ford dropped the manual transmission from the S650 Mustang EcoBoost for the 2024 model year, with contemporary reports attributing the decision to low demand: roughly 10% of previous EcoBoost orders were for a manual. The change removed one choice for enthusiasts, but it did not end manual S650 Mustangs: Ford kept a six-speed manual available with V8 models. The available evidence does not show how many buyers left Ford because of the EcoBoost decision.
What changed with the S650 Mustang?
The S650 is the seventh-generation Mustang introduced for the 2024 model year. Ford offered it with a 2.3-liter turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder or a 5.0-liter Coyote V8. The key difference for shoppers seeking a stick shift was that the EcoBoost became automatic-only, while V8 configurations retained a manual option.
Ford’s September 2022 launch announcement described the GT’s six-speed manual as standard and a 10-speed automatic as available. Its announcement did not promise a manual EcoBoost. The company framed the EcoBoost as the fuel-efficiency-oriented choice and highlighted the manual V8 as a direct connection to eight-cylinder power. Ford’s S650 launch announcement sets out that initial lineup.
Why did Ford remove the EcoBoost manual?
The Drive reported that Ford attributed the decision to a manual take rate of around 10% among previous EcoBoost orders. MotorTrend reported the same approximate rationale. That is a reported business explanation, not a public, comprehensive account of every factor Ford weighed.

- Functionality: This lower shift rubber boot with metal support plate delivers a tight seal around the manual shifter base. It blocks dust, moisture and debris from entering the transmission assembly, cuts down shifting noise, minimizes internal corrosion and component wear, and sustains smooth, consistent gear‑shifting performance
- Compatible With: 1979-2004 Ford Mustang Please make sure that this accessory is suitable for your vehicle
- OE Number: 3R3Z-7277-R 3R3Z7277R Please check the part numbers whether it suits your vehicle before purchasing
- Higher Quality:Made of high‑elasticity wear‑resistant rubber and sturdy metal support plate, this lower shifter boot resists aging, cracking and deformation, providing long‑lasting sealing performance under long‑term shifting friction
- Timely Replacement: Timely replacement of a worn lower‑shift rubber boot is critical to protecting your manual transmission system. Cracked, hardened or deteriorated rubber seals allow dust, moisture and debris to infiltrate the shifter assembly, causing internal corrosion, accelerated component wear and unpleasant shifting noise. Early replacement safeguards gear‑shift components and maintains smooth, consistent shifting performance
The Drive also noted that the EcoBoost and V8 used different bellhousing designs. That difference alone does not establish that an EcoBoost manual was physically impossible, or that engineering cost was the decisive reason. The reporting supports a simpler conclusion: Ford said demand for the manual EcoBoost was low enough that it did not carry the option into the new generation. Which S650 Mustangs can be ordered with a manual?
The configuration depends on the engine and trim, not simply whether a Mustang is an S650. In the 2025 U.S. order guide, the MT82-D4 six-speed manual is listed for the GT, not the EcoBoost. The guide also identifies a manual option for the Dark Horse. Check the guide for the relevant model year and market, since equipment can change. Ford’s 2025 Mustang order guide provides the detailed listing.

Did the decision actually drive enthusiasts away?
It plainly narrowed the choices for buyers who wanted both an S650 EcoBoost and a manual. A Mustang7G forum discussion includes an owner questioning the choice, evidence that at least some owners objected. A forum post is anecdotal, however; it cannot measure how common that reaction was or whether those owners bought another brand, chose an older Mustang, or accepted an automatic. The discussion illustrates the complaint without establishing its scale.
Early orders showed considerable interest in V8s and manuals, but they do not prove that EcoBoost manual buyers were numerous or that the change caused customers to defect. Associated Press reported Ford figures for about 13,000 U.S. Mustang orders as of August 11, 2023: 67% included the V8, and more than a quarter sought a six-speed manual. These were early orders, not final sales, and AP noted that early buyers tend to include enthusiasts. AP’s report also quotes Ford Mustang brand manager Jim Owens saying demand for the V8 tends to be higher among enthusiasts when a new Mustang arrives.

What are the practical choices if you want a manual Mustang?
- Choose a manual S650: Look at the V8 GT or Dark Horse configurations in the order guide for your model year. This preserves the manual option, but means stepping away from the EcoBoost powertrain.
- Prioritize an EcoBoost with a stick: Consider an earlier model year, and verify the transmission for the exact car by its year and equipment. The sources here establish the S650 EcoBoost’s automatic-only status beginning in 2024; they do not establish current used-car prices or availability.
- Compare total ownership costs, not just the transmission: Ford’s launch materials position the EcoBoost as the fuel-efficiency-oriented model, but the sources cited here do not provide a reliable price or running-cost comparison between specific trims. Use current local listings and insurance, fuel, and financing quotes before deciding whether a V8 is affordable for you.
