What Sony announced about Firewalk and Concord
Sony Interactive Entertainment said on October 29, 2024, that Concord would be permanently sunset and Firewalk Studios would close. The announcement came from Sony, not an unnamed source. Sony’s announcement described the decision and the company’s stated rationale.

Hermen Hulst, CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Studio Business Group, said the PvP first-person-shooter genre was competitive and continuously evolving, and that Sony had not hit its targets with the title. He also said some aspects of the game had not reached enough players. Those are Sony’s stated reasons, not an independent account of every factor behind the outcome.
When Concord launched and went offline
- August 23, 2024: Concord launched worldwide for PlayStation 5 and PC as a 5v5 multiplayer shooter, according to the official launch announcement.
- September 3, 2024: Firewalk Game Director Ryan Ellis announced that the game would go offline beginning September 6. Sales would stop immediately, and refunds would be offered to purchasers. The notice said refunded players would lose access.
- September 6, 2024: The announced date when the game began going offline.
- October 29, 2024: Sony announced the permanent sunset and Firewalk’s closure.
What is known—and not known—about the release
Sony said the game did not reach enough players and missed its targets, but its public statements did not quantify the shortfall. They do not provide an official sales total, concurrent-player figure, development budget, or financial-loss number. Dates for the launch, temporary offline period, and permanent sunset are documented events, not performance statistics.

Ellis acknowledged that some qualities of the experience resonated with players, while other aspects of the game and its initial launch did not land as intended. That comment and Sony’s later explanation establish the companies’ public assessment; they do not, by themselves, prove a single cause for the game’s outcome. Claims assigning exact sales, audience, budget, or losses should not be presented as official figures unless supported by a separate reliable source.

Sony and Firewalk announced a standard PS5 edition in both physical and digital formats in June 2024. The existence of a disc does not mean the online game remains playable: Sony later permanently sunset Concord.

For physical copies bought from a retailer other than PlayStation directly, Firewalk directed customers to that retailer’s refund process. Refund arrangements therefore depended on where the copy was purchased. The September notice also said that players who received a refund would lose access.
A physical copy may be of interest as media or a collectible, but it should not be treated as a way to access the discontinued online service. Anyone considering a secondhand copy should check its region and edition, condition and completeness, and the seller’s return terms; current availability and market prices are not established here.
