Eurowings is set to receive 40 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft allocated from a Lufthansa Group order. The airline says the planes will gradually replace its A319s and older A320s. Deliveries were initially announced for 2027 through 2032, but Lufthansa Group’s fleet table lists the aircraft for 2028 through 2032, so the current public sources do not give one fully consistent start date.
Why is Eurowings getting 40 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft?
The aircraft are intended to renew Eurowings’ fleet, not to expand a separately announced Eurowings purchase. Eurowings said the 737-8 MAX planes would gradually replace its A319 fleet and older A320 aircraft as they arrive. The announcement does not specify how many of each older type will leave service or the exact retirement schedule.
Lufthansa Group described the aircraft as part of its group-level fleet planning. It said new aircraft are allocated centrally to airline fleets shortly before delivery. That means the 40-plane allocation identifies Eurowings as the planned operator, while the order itself belongs to Lufthansa Group.
When will the planes arrive?
The schedule depends on which official announcement is used. Eurowings’ January 20, 2025 release said the first aircraft would arrive in 2027 and all 40 by 2032. Lufthansa Group’s fleet table, consulted October 8, 2026, lists 40 Boeing 737-8 aircraft for delivery from 2028 through 2032. The sources do not explain the one-year difference in the announced start date.

| Source and date | Reported timing | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Eurowings, January 20, 2025 | 2027–2032 | First delivery scheduled for 2027; all 40 aircraft expected by 2032. |
| Lufthansa Group fleet table, consulted October 8, 2026 | 2028–2032 | Lists 40 Boeing 737-8 aircraft for delivery during this period. |
Neither schedule guarantees a particular delivery date for an individual aircraft. The clearest reading is that Eurowings announced a 2027 start in 2025, while the group’s later fleet table shows a 2028 start; the available sources do not say whether this reflects a schedule change or a different reporting basis.
How the 40-aircraft order developed
- December 19, 2023: Lufthansa Group announced a firm order for 40 Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft and 60 purchase options. At that point it said the planes would be deployed in one of its airline operations, without naming Eurowings. Lufthansa Group’s order announcement.
- January 20, 2025: Eurowings announced that Lufthansa Group had allocated all 40 aircraft to the airline and set out its initial delivery schedule. Eurowings’ announcement.
- September 17, 2026: Lufthansa Group said it had exercised options for 20 Boeing 737 MAX 10s, bringing its firm MAX-family orders to 60. Those additional aircraft are scheduled to begin arriving in the early 2030s. The announcement does not assign them to Eurowings, so they are separate from the airline’s 40-plane allocation. Lufthansa Group’s MAX 10 announcement.
What efficiency claims has Eurowings made?
Eurowings promoted lower fuel use, noise and emissions as benefits of the newer aircraft. Its announcement says the latest-generation planes use “up to 30 percent less kerosene” and emit correspondingly less CO2. That is the airline’s stated comparison; the announcement passage does not identify a precise aircraft baseline or operating conditions. It should not be read as a guaranteed reduction on every route or as a lifecycle-emissions comparison.

What the announcement does—and does not—tell passengers
The fleet plan establishes the intended aircraft type, operator and replacement role, but it does not provide a passenger-facing timetable for particular routes. It also does not say when specific A319s or older A320s will leave service. Until aircraft are delivered and assigned to schedules, travelers should not assume that a particular Eurowings flight will use a 737 MAX 8.
