Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney objects to Steam’s disclosure labels for games containing AI-generated content, arguing they could stigmatize titles and make it harder for developers to succeed. Steam’s policy is not a blanket label for every game made with AI-assisted tools: it concerns AI-generated content, with Steam’s updated disclosure form described as focusing on material players consume.
What prompted the dispute?
The headline refers to Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, the company behind Fortnite. The specific controversy began with Steam’s AI-content disclosure policy, which was announced by Valve in January 2024. Sweeney criticized the approach again in June 2026, saying the label could invite hostility toward a game. The word “furious” is headline framing; the substantiated issue is his opposition to the requirement.
Valve’s Steamworks announcement says disclosure information appears on a game’s Steam store page. It also describes a reporting mechanism for illegal content in games using live-generated AI.
Does Steam label every game made with AI tools?
No. The distinction is between AI-generated content in the game and AI tools used behind the scenes to help make it. The UK House of Commons Library’s January 2026 briefing describes two categories: pre-generated content created with AI tools during development, and live-generated content created while the game is running. A January 2026 PC Gamer report says Steam clarified its disclosure form to focus on AI-generated content “consumed by players,” rather than efficiency tools used behind the scenes.

That means using AI as a development aid is not, by itself, the same as putting AI-generated material in front of players. Exact form wording and disclosure thresholds can change, so developers should consult Steamworks’ current guidance before submitting a game.
How Steam and Epic differ
| Question | Steam | Epic Games Store |
|---|---|---|
| Does the storefront require AI-content disclosure? | Yes, for specified AI-generated content, according to Valve’s Steamworks announcement and the Commons Library’s January 2026 briefing. | The Commons Library’s January 2026 briefing says Epic’s storefront does not require a similar disclosure. |
| What kind of AI use is relevant? | Steam’s framework distinguishes pre-generated and live-generated content. January 2026 reporting says the form focuses on content consumed by players, not ordinary workflow tools. | A comparable disclosure threshold is not stated in the cited Commons Library briefing. |
| Where do players see disclosure? | On the game’s Steam store page, according to Valve. | A comparable placement is not stated in the cited Commons Library briefing. |
The comparison reflects the sources cited above, not a guarantee that either storefront’s current developer rules have remained unchanged.

Why does Sweeney object?
Sweeney’s argument is that an AI label could become a stigma, discouraging players or attracting people who want to damage a game’s prospects. In Tom’s Hardware’s 25 June 2026 report, he said: “I think the main usage case that we’ve seen within Epic, and we’re seeing developers actually find gainful, is using AI to reduce the drudge work.”
He also argued that developers need Steam for visibility and wishlists, and that a label could invite backlash. As quoted in the same report, he called Valve’s policy “really irresponsible” and said it makes success “much, much, much harder” for developers. Those are Sweeney’s views, not evidence that Steam’s label has caused a particular game to lose sales, wishlists, or reviews.

What is established—and what is not?
- Established: Steam requires disclosures for specified AI-generated content, and its announcement says disclosure appears on the store page.
- Established: The policy distinguishes types of generated content; recent reporting describes a focus on material players consume rather than behind-the-scenes efficiency tools.
- Not established: The sources cited here do not provide a verified statistic showing that the label reduces sales, wishlists, review counts, or a game’s chance of commercial success.
For players, the label is information about AI-generated content, not proof that a game is good or bad. For developers, the practical question is what their game actually presents to players and what the storefront’s current disclosure form requires.
