What the headline is—and is not
Futurism published the article under the headline supplied here on June 3, 2025. It was a news-analysis and commentary piece, not a Tesla disclosure or transcript. Its language about employees being “startled” and questions about Musk’s “state of mind” goes beyond what the publicly described evidence proves. Read the Futurism article.

According to anonymous sources cited by The New York Times and summarized by Futurism, Musk made an unusual appearance at Tesla’s Palo Alto office before the company’s April 22, 2025, first-quarter earnings call. He reportedly asked for a briefing on the effect of Trump’s tariffs on Tesla production.

The available account does not establish the meeting’s exact date, the identities or number of participants, or Musk’s precise wording. It supports only that unnamed people involved in the call considered the question surprising. It does not show that Musk had forgotten the tariff policy or did not understand it.
Why the question seemed unusual
Musk’s proximity to the policy
Musk had been working closely with the Trump administration through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Employees could therefore have expected him to be familiar with a policy that directly affected Tesla’s supply chain and production economics.
The timing after a period of limited attention
The question came as Musk was spending substantial time in Washington rather than on Tesla’s day-to-day operations. A request for a briefing could simply have been normal executive preparation after an absence. In that context, however, participants reportedly interpreted it as a sign that he needed to catch up.

Interpretation is not proof
Calling the episode evidence of “disengagement” reflects the anonymous sources’ interpretation and Futurism’s framing. It is not an official Tesla conclusion, and it cannot establish what Musk knew, intended or was capable of doing.
Tesla’s documented financial position in the same quarter
The anecdote mattered because it occurred while Tesla was under material financial and operational pressure. Tesla’s own release provides the primary baseline:

Sources attributed the weaker results to a combination of factors, including deliveries, tariffs, market conditions, product-cycle effects and controversy surrounding the company and its chief executive. The figures do not show that Musk’s political work alone caused the decline.

During the April 22 earnings call, Musk said the time he spent on DOGE would “drop significantly,” likely beginning in May. NPR described that statement as a planned refocus on Tesla. It was a statement about expected time allocation, not an announcement that he had immediately left DOGE or restored normal operational involvement at Tesla.
NPR’s account of the call and Associated Press coverage put that promise in the context of investor pressure for greater attention to Tesla.

What the employee reaction does—and does not—show
- It may illustrate concern that Tesla’s chief executive had become less engaged while working on DOGE.
- It does not demonstrate that all Tesla employees were startled or shared the same view.
- It does not prove confusion, intoxication, cognitive impairment, a medical condition or incompetence.
- It does not establish whether the question reflected ignorance, a strategic request for current data or an incomplete internal briefing.
- There is no documented Tesla investigation or official statement validating the reported interpretation.
A single question cannot resolve the broader leadership issue: how effectively one executive can manage Tesla alongside several other companies and a major public-sector initiative. That is a question for sustained evidence about decisions and execution, not a diagnosis based on one anecdote.
Bottom line
The most defensible account is that anonymous participants found Musk’s April 2025 request for a tariff briefing unusual after his time away from Tesla, and some interpreted it as evidence of executive detachment. Tesla’s weak first-quarter results and investor demands for renewed focus made the episode more consequential. The reporting does not prove that Musk was confused or impaired, and “returned to Tesla” means a promised reallocation of attention—not a formal change in his role.
