How the Netflix campaign began
The early focus was Dead End: Paranormal Park, an animated series with a gay and transgender protagonist. TheWrap reported that the show ran for two seasons in 2022 and Netflix canceled it in 2023. After the account Libs of TikTok criticized the program, Musk replied, “This is not ok,” then urged people to cancel Netflix and amplified further criticism. TheWrap’s October 2, 2025 report describes that sequence.

Why Hamish Steele’s Charlie Kirk comments became part of the dispute
The controversy also drew on comments attributed to Hamish Steele, creator of Dead End: Paranormal Park. The Standard reported that Steele responded to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s condolence message after Charlie Kirk’s death with: “Our sympathy for any of the families being slaughtered by your own weapons but a random Nazi gets shot and it’s a public statement.” That quotation is reported by The Standard; the underlying post was not independently verified in the coverage summarized here.
The Standard also reported that Musk reposted another user’s claim about canceling Netflix and replied “same.” That account does not establish that Musk himself completed a cancellation. The Standard’s October 2, 2025 coverage connects the posts and the surrounding dispute.

What Musk said, and which shows he targeted
On October 1, Musk wrote, “Cancel Netflix for the health of your kids,” in a post quoted by Vanity Fair on October 3, 2025. Vanity Fair reported that he had criticized the service over roughly the preceding 48 hours and described his X audience at the time as 227 million followers; that is a dated figure, not a current follower count.
Musk and accounts whose posts he amplified broadened the criticism beyond Dead End to programs including CoComelon, Strawberry Shortcake: Berry in the Big City, and The Baby-Sitters Club. The allegations about those programs and Netflix’s motives belong to the people making them, not to established findings. Musk accused Netflix of promoting a transgender “agenda” and described children’s programming as sexualized or grooming. The cited reports do not substantiate those characterizations as facts.

What the campaign does—and does not—show financially
The reporting establishes public calls to cancel and social-media amplification. It does not provide verified figures for how many subscribers canceled, or demonstrate a sustained financial impact caused by the campaign. The Standard reported that Netflix shares fell about 2.34% in one trading session and closed at $1,170.90 on October 2, 2025. That is a contemporaneous market observation, not evidence that Musk’s campaign caused the decline.
For context on Netflix’s response, Vanity Fair said it had contacted creators of three cited programs and that Netflix had not responded to its request by October 3, 2025. TheWrap reported on October 2 that Netflix had not immediately responded to its request. Those reports describe the companies’ responses at those dates only; they do not establish Netflix’s later position.
