Coinbase transactions that seem slow usually fall into one of three separate processes: a bank-funded cash payment, a crypto transfer waiting on its blockchain, or an account review. Each has different causes, different timelines, and a different party who can move it forward. Identifying which one you are waiting on is the fastest way to find out whether you simply need to wait or need to act.
Identify which kind of delay you have
“Coinbase is slow” can describe very different situations. Use the table below to match your transaction to the process behind it. The right contact depends on the process, not on how long you have been waiting.
| Situation | What it is waiting on | Who can move it forward |
|---|---|---|
| Bank deposit or cash purchase funded by ACH or wire | Traditional bank payment processing and any bank-side authorization | Your bank for authorization or transfer questions; Coinbase Support if the status is unclear after the expected window |
| “Funds temporarily on hold” on a cash deposit | The hold period, which ends after the bank processes the request and Coinbase receives the cash | No one can shorten it; wait for the availability date shown in your confirmation email |
| Outgoing crypto send showing pending | Blockchain confirmations, network fees, or network processing | Usually no action until the normal send window has passed; then check the transaction on a block explorer and contact Coinbase if it is still unresolved |
| Incoming crypto that has not arrived | Confirmation on the sender’s network, and whether the network is supported by Coinbase | The sender, if the transfer is unconfirmed on-chain; Coinbase Support if it is confirmed but not credited |
| Account review or requested information | Identity verification, updated account information, or a security or regulatory check | You, by completing the requested item; then Coinbase Support if the timeframe passes |
Why bank deposits and cash withdrawals are slow
Cash moved through traditional banking rails, such as ACH or wire transfers, follows the bank’s payment schedule rather than Coinbase’s. Coinbase’s help guidance says these transfers typically settle in one to three business days, but the timing varies by region, asset, and payment method. Your bank may also run its own checks before releasing funds. If your bank requires you to authorize a payment on its website and that step is not completed, the payment may never process, so check that first.
Funds on hold: tradeable but not withdrawable
A cash deposit can be usable on Coinbase before it can leave the platform. Coinbase says it credits the deposit so you can buy, sell, and trade crypto right away, but the funds stay unavailable for withdrawal while a “Funds temporarily on hold” notice applies. Coinbase requests the cash from your bank within three to five days, and the hold lifts once the bank has processed the request and Coinbase has received the money. Coinbase states this hold cannot be shortened. This is why you may see a balance, trade it, and still be unable to cash out or send the purchased crypto.

How the hold end date is set
Coinbase’s available-balance guidance says hold periods depend on factors such as account history, payment activity, and transaction history. Your confirmation email shows the expected availability date. Holds typically expire by 23:59 Pacific Time on that date. The date can be extended for disputed transactions or account safety reasons. Coinbase Support cannot reduce the hold time, so contacting support will not speed up a hold that is working as scheduled.
Why a crypto transfer stays pending
Crypto transfers are not controlled by Coinbase alone. Once a transaction is broadcast, it waits for the network to include it in blocks and for enough confirmations to accumulate. Coinbase’s guidance says transactions to or from a primary balance can remain pending until they receive the required network confirmations.

Confirmations, fees, and network congestion
When many transactions compete for limited block space, a transfer with a low network fee can wait longer. Coinbase lists insufficient network fees and insufficient confirmations among the common causes of pending status. Coinbase’s send-and-receive troubleshooting guidance says most sends complete within 30 minutes, and recommends waiting at least that long before troubleshooting a pending send. That is guidance rather than a guarantee, and it does not account for periods of heavy network congestion on a particular asset.
Network sync problems and rejected transactions
Coinbase lists temporary loss of synchronization with the wider crypto network as a cause of pending status. Coinbase’s help material describes this as usually lasting under an hour, though rare cases of network rejection may remain unapproved. Other listed causes include pending inputs, attempts to spend assets that are still pending, and double-spending prevention, which can hold a transaction that conflicts with another one.

Lightning payments
An incomplete Lightning payment depends on the sender finishing the payment. Coinbase says a Lightning invoice can remain pending for up to 72 hours. If the sender never completes the payment, it will not move on its own.
Incoming crypto deposits
For an incoming transfer, the sender’s transaction hash shows whether the payment is confirmed on-chain. Coinbase says it credits funds after confirmation, and only if the network used is one it supports. If the transaction is not confirmed on-chain, the sender is the right party to investigate. If it is confirmed but missing from your account, check whether the asset and network are supported and contact Coinbase about recovery options. Coinbase’s troubleshooting guidance says crypto receives are generally credited within three to five business days after any requested account actions are completed, and that you should contact support if the delay continues.

When an account review is the cause
Coinbase says some transactions may be delayed, placed under review, or canceled because of security checks, regulatory requirements, or network conditions. Its Coinbase Business help page states that most transactions finish within a few hours, though some take longer, and that an email will explain any further action needed. That page covers business accounts, so treat its timing as a general description rather than a fixed timeline for an individual retail account.
For a missing crypto receive, review your account messages and alerts first. Coinbase may be waiting on identity verification or updated account information. Some restricted actions can also remain unavailable after an initial hold. Do not assume a review is happening unless Coinbase’s status or a message says so.

A step-by-step diagnostic
- Open the individual transaction in your Coinbase transaction history and note whether it is a cash deposit, cash withdrawal, crypto send, crypto receive, or purchase.
- Read the exact status, any displayed availability date, and any account alert. A pending label on its own does not identify the cause.
- For crypto, open the transaction hash in a block explorer for the same network. Check the confirmation count, the destination address, and that the sender used the intended supported network.
- If the transfer is unconfirmed, ask the sender to investigate. If it is confirmed but not credited, check network support and contact Coinbase Support.
- For bank-funded cash, compare the expected settlement and hold dates with the normal processing window. Confirm that your bank did not require an authorization you have not completed.
- Check whether the balance is tradeable but not withdrawable. If a hold notice applies, wait for the availability date in your confirmation email.
- If Coinbase requests identity or account information, complete the request and watch your account for further instructions. If the expected window passes or the status remains unclear, contact Coinbase Support. For a bank-side delay, ask your bank about the transfer or authorization status.
What stays specific to your account
Coinbase’s help pages explain the common causes of delay, but they cannot tell you why a particular transaction is slow. The answer depends on that transaction’s status, asset and network, payment method, account alerts, and displayed availability date. The timeframes above are Coinbase’s own operational estimates. None of them is an independently measured average, and the help pages do not display a publication date, so they may change. If your transaction falls outside the expected window with no explanation, the status and any Coinbase messages are the most reliable guide to your next step.
