Other hotels charge the same for two or three people. There is no universal rule: the price depends on the property, room, dates, and rate plan.
Is a hotel room price per person or per room?
It can be either. Some hotels set a price for the room that does not change when a third guest is added. Others include a set number of guests in the rate and charge extra for each person beyond that allowance. A property’s rules may also vary by room type, rate plan, and date.
For example, Japan’s Tourism Agency explains that some ryokan charge per room, while facilities may charge for guests beyond the room’s official capacity. Marriott says each participating hotel sets supplemental charges based on extra occupants’ ages. These are examples of different approaches, not rules that apply to all hotels. Marriott’s all-inclusive booking guidance and the Japan Tourism Agency’s ryokan guidance illustrate why the rate depends on the specific stay.
Why can adding a third guest raise the price?
The rate may include only a certain number of guests
A room’s displayed price may cover two guests, with an additional-person charge for a third. The booking system may calculate that charge according to the room, rate plan, and stay dates. Google’s hotel-pricing documentation describes these as configurable charges, rather than a single standard formula. Google’s documentation for extra-guest charges explains how they can be set up.

An extra bed or different room may be needed
A room’s maximum occupancy and bedding options can limit whether three people can stay in it. Alila Solo, for example, lists a maximum occupancy of three and says accommodation for a third guest may depend on room type and extra-bed availability. Its FAQ lists an extra-bed price of IDR 726,000 net per bed per night, including taxes and breakfast; this is a property-specific rate that may change, not a typical or industry-wide price. Alila Solo’s FAQ gives its current stated terms. A Paris hotel’s terms also describe an extra-bed charge in eligible rooms and reserve the right to refuse guests above a room’s maximum occupancy. Hotel La Nouvelle République’s terms show how room eligibility can matter.
The extra guest may receive meals or other package benefits
A higher rate may include something beyond the sleeping space. PARKROYAL Penang says its third-person charge in certain room categories includes an extra bed and breakfast. At Marriott all-inclusive resorts, the stated package for award stays covers up to two people; charges for additional occupants are not covered. These policies are specific to the named properties and booking contexts, so check what the rate actually includes. PARKROYAL Penang’s third-person policy and Marriott’s all-inclusive guidance describe those examples.

Children may be priced differently
Do not assume a child stays free or is charged the same as an adult. Some rules depend on age, and a young child may incur a fee if food or bedding is provided. Marriott’s example ties supplemental charges to extra occupants’ ages; Japan’s Tourism Agency also notes that charges for children can depend on age and on whether meals or bedding are needed. Enter each guest’s age when asked, then check the property’s rules.
Taxes and other fees can change the total
The amount shown before checkout may not include every charge. Taxes and fee treatment depend on the destination and the particular booking. New York State guidance, for instance, explains that sales tax applies to qualifying hotel occupancy charges and discusses extra-person fees; that guidance is specific to New York and should not be applied to other locations. New York State’s hotel and motel occupancy tax guidance describes the state’s rules.

How to compare the price for two guests and three
- Use identical booking details. Compare the same hotel, room type, dates, rate plan, and cancellation terms. Change only the guest count so the price difference is meaningful.
- Enter the actual group size and ages. Include all adults and children, and provide children’s ages when requested. The applicable rate may depend on those details.
- Check occupancy and bedding. Confirm the room’s maximum occupancy and whether an extra bed is available for that room type. A room that cannot accommodate three may not be a valid option even if the booking page displays a price.
- Inspect what the increase covers. Check whether it includes an extra bed, breakfast, all-inclusive benefits, or a separate extra-person charge. If the breakdown is unclear, ask the property to explain the price for your exact reservation.
- Compare the final total. Review taxes and property fees as well as the nightly rate. Use the total for the full stay and the same terms, not just the initial per-night figure.
There is no universal formula for a third-person surcharge. The reliable comparison is the final price for the correct guest count, room, dates, and rate terms.
